Are flash pan guards historically correct or just something the muzzleloading industry thinks I should have? I like the idea of not having to worry about the poor guy on my right every time I let my hammer fall. Do flash pan guards really work? Thanks guys!

Yes they work. No, they're not historically correct. They're more the concept of range safety officers than the "industry." It's a way for groups involved in blackpowder to cover their ass(ets) from the litigous, greedy, helpless victim sods that we (collectively as a society) have become.
Most original Brown Besses didn't say "Please Read Instruction Manual Before Use" on the barrel, either.

Do they work?
They do direct the "POOF" upwards as to the side, some flintlocks can send a stream of expanding gas more than two feet to the side, depending on the size of the main charge and the diameter of the vent...
This could be a scary thing when standing shoulder to shoulder in ranks, unless you're in the upper left...
This type of injury was common among foot soldiers and called a "tattoo" typically showing along the beard line of the unfortunate standing next to the shooter.
As for Period Correct...
