I just picked up 40 boxes of TC 430 grain maxiballs at a yard sale for 2.00 a box. with my Hornady great plains bullet I always uise a wonder wad. I cant remember if you use a wad under a flat base bullet or not.
I would, though with the GP bullets I do not, GREAT groups right outta the box and stuffed down the bore. Before I went pretty much 100% PRB GP was all I was found with. Knocks snot outta deer-buffalo
I love the GP bullet myself, half of my guns I shoot patched roundball only and the other half I use conicals. , when I first got back into traditional muzzleloading I used only conicals, now with several guns with roundball only barrels im slowly shooting more and more patched roundballs.
I've been shooting those 370grn. tc maxi balls in my .50cal. hawken since the mid 70's. it has always performed well. last fall I tried some over powder wads from totw and you wouldn't believe how tight the groups were at 50yds. all that was shot from bench rest.
those wads weren't lubed just dry felt type.
Have shot both the MaxiBalls and the Buffalo Bullets and achieved good accuracy w/o a wad/. Stopped using conicals because they moved off the powder in a clean bbl.. Checking their position in the bore while hunting is a pain. Tried stuffing paper ahead of the conical, but the accuracy suffered.
Seeing the Civil War was mainly fought w/ rifled muskets using Minie Balls which are designed under size w/ the bore for easy loading w/ a fouled bbl, I wonder how many bulged bbls were caused by the Minie moving off the powder in a clean bbl? Or did they intentionally foul the bbl to prevent the Mimie from moving?.....Fred
