How do I go about making a flat powder horn?? I would like to make one for day hunts, and also a priming horn..

It takes practice, and I'm not wonderful at it yet. You have to be very selective with the horn, not too thick, not too thin. I've heated it in boiling water to soften it, others say they use boiling oil. You can squeeze it with boards in a vise or make forms of some kind, depending upon just what you want.

Hungryhunter, You were asking some of these same questions and getting answers over on THE HORNER'S BENCH website a few months ago and the answers haven't changed!...... Just reminding you!

Rick

HungryHunter, if your in range, I would definitely take Gary up and workshop with him.
Personally, I f I were to make a flat horn I would use dry heat (i.e. a heat gun) and heat the horn as hot as I dared without burning it, then press it down in a vise or book press using several "shims" as the horn flattens an extra shim gets added progressivley until I got it as flat as I was looking for.
Now, that said, I don't have a whole lot of experience in this department so that is just how I would go about doing it. :idunno: hope this helps.
