Flint Dragoon Pistols

Can anyone help me with the differences between English and French light or heavy dragoon pistols?Is there a good discussion or is this just something you pick up along the way. Biccio's book is not available right now and I am interested in shooting a .54 along with my So Mtn Rifle and I was wondering which , other things being equal, I would be happiest with.
