Flint Knapping Books

Any good books you recommend on finding and knapping flint - not just for flintlocks, but obviously that is also desirable.

I bought a bunch of books on flintknapping 40 years ago, not much on finding flint and I never practiced the instructions enough to really get the whole process down.

I would avoid the books now and go to youtube videos. Finding workable flint or chirt in your area could be difficult or very easy depending on where you live. You can buy it on-line but it tends to be pricy. If you could go to any of the many Knap-ins around the country you could buy flint in abundance as well as get top notch instruction on how to work your flint for free.

A lot of the traditional archery tournaments have a knapping pit where like-minded folk gather up like a sewing bee and work flint. Here is a typical knapping pit at some event. There was one similar picture from Ft Smith Arkansas but it was copy righted and I couldn't save it.

I would think Arkansas would have an abundance of flint if you knew where to look.

You could go to the Primitive Archer site and ask about finding flint where you live and get plenty of answers.

expect a lot of waist and long learning curve but it is fun/addicting safety glasses (a must)and cut resistant gloves help

you can make most of the tools
start with flakes (easy to make into gun flints)then try it from blades
