flint knapping

I bought 18lbs of flint and need to know how to knapp it into something usable. I was thing about a use for flint and steel. How big of a piece is needed? :hmm:

Depends. I have used a gun flint. If not a pro I would use a peice that fits your hand good,the main thing is to get a sharp edge to cut the steel. When you do any knapping always wear safety glasses. I make most of my gun flints as I pick flint by 5gals in gravels here. Its not the best,but it works.If you check the Foxfire book,I think no5or6 it shows a guy knapping flints. Dilly

I like using pieces as big or bigger than a fig bar. I like to keep one side dull for handling and all the rest sharp.

DC Waldorf's book "The art of flint knapping" has a good section on gun flints. Some good pics of tools and the techniques. Don't know how much it costs now, was 10 bucks when I got mine way back. Trust me, after you crack a few nodules you'll have some chards for your fire kit :shocked2: .
