when your flint starts to wear down do any of you guy's ever shim the back of the flint with leather to make it stick out more
Kinda Sorta.....On a couple of occasions where I had a black English flint that still had an outstanding edge but was just getting too short, I have wrapped a second flint leather around the first leather which produced the effect I think you're referring to...I use 1/8" leathers so a second one with is thick 'bend' adds a lot of forward movement

I haven't shimmed the back side of the flint but I have a friend that ordered a bunch of flints that were too short. He just put a little "stick" in behind the flint and kept on a going.

Well i just ordered 2 doz. flints from TOW I relised too late that I had ordered the wrong ones i ordered 3/4x7/8 and I nedded 1x7/8 I guess I'll just have to send them back TC...rusty

You can move the flint ahead and have a gap behind it and it will work just fine. If it's held properly in the jaws, it does not need a backstop to prevent it from sliding back.

When I get a misfire cuz of worn flint I just grab ahold of it and give it a slight twist. Next shot usually goes off.
