Well, I solved my "dilema" with my Pedersoli kentucky flinter that I decided I didn't want. After seeing several recommendations for John Taylor, I'm having him fix my rifle up with a drum/nipple and new hammer. That'll make a very nice caplock out of this rifle.

I just prefer the caplock's uncomplicated (by comparison) procedure and the lack of flash-woosh in front of my nose. It's cool to be sure, but I'm a lazy shooter I guess cause I don't want to mess with training myself to ignore all that. And then there's the messing with the flints. Just better for me to cap it and bang! There's plenty to do with ball, patch, lube, charge, etc. etc.

:surrender:

Well, I changed my mind. John suggested looking into Pedersoli replacement locks - and I did and decided to just go that route - a bit more but not much considering I don't have to ship the rifle back and forth. I can tell already why he comes so well recommended - truely helped me with the decsion and I appreciate that! Found the lock at VTI which was recommended by TOTW - two more good uns!

I've learned a lot on this board...

John's going to do some barrel work on another rifle for me though - turning my 54 CVA mountain rifle (which I've determined has too much rust pitting after all) into a 58 :) That'll be fun to shoot!

I changed a .32 cal. flint to a caplock two years ago because at the time I couldn't find black powder. It is a gun I built twenty some years ago. I cut the flash pan off, drilled out the vent liner and replaced it with a drum. I didn't change the hammer. I just soldered a 3/8" sq. steel block in the flint jawes, drilled a spot where it strikes the nipple. Drilled and taped the drum for the nipple. It worked fine and looks like a converted job. Only took about thirty minutes and cost nonthing. :winking:

A frankenmuzzleloader huh? :haha:

Hey, sometimes all that counts is how it works - how about a pic - do you still have that?

My Pedersoli is really a nice lookin pole so I didn't want ruin the lines. Besides, I figure I might be able to sell the flitlock mech and recoup some of the cost - its practically new.
