Beautiful morning”¦horizontal strips of clouds”¦the sun was still below the horizon but reflecting red up into the visible strips of sky between cloud layers”¦cool, threatening rain.

Set up speaker and rabbit motion decoy 30yds away from a natural blind in a brushy ravine, called coyotes for an hour”¦never saw a coyote, fox, bobcat, etc.

Setup must have been OK though”¦two different occasions red-tailed hawks landed in the big oak tree I was leaning against, eyeballing that rabbit motion decoy and I had to shoo them off for fear they’d dive on the thing and break it”¦started raining so I left.

Hawk meat is probly tough and stringy but they got some purdy feathers fer yer hat. :hmm:

...i was calling in a tom and not watching my hen decoy...all of a sudden it looked like a tom was doin' it to my decoy..was ready to let him have it when it lifted off the ground ...was a big hawk flying right at me with my hen decoy in it's talons...an awesome sight.

I was out some this morning myself in the 30mph gusts! Two coons were the only thing that we saw.

Most definitely. And thanks for sharing it.

I've found it adds a ton more satisfaction for me by going as ALL traditional as possible when calling predators with a front stuffer (ie no camo, no electronic dodads). It's a great excuse to be out trekking to stands wearing your persona and living it. An easy decoy that works well is a feather on a string hanging from a branch upwind, and with the calling all done with a home made antler or wood mouth call the hunt is more one-on-one. Besides being a great time in the beautiful outdoors, its easy to imagine you're dong so at a time very long ago. And when a predator is scored, well, now that's a trophy.

Hoorah :hatsoff:

Coyotes are very wary critters and certainly a difficult trophy with any weapon. Hats off to you for even trying to get one with a flintlock. :hatsoff: Don't give up - every outdoor adventure is worth the time and it's not all about the kill.

Yes, that's the point...I've got big scoped flat shooting rifles I could use to drop one way out there...gettin' close with a Flintlock is the interest...I actually have no use for a Coyote if I shoot one so I'd rather go after one with a Flintlock and not get one, than get a dozen with a .264 Win/Mag at 300yds...just have to try some other locations to see if I can find any to call in.

Have basically been doing all my hunting with muzzleloaders for quite a while now...finally sold off a few CF rifles a couple years ago...sold off a few more last year...need to start selling off most everything else as I just don't use that stuff anymore...besides, if I die before my Wife, she'd get 'taken to the cleaners' trying to sell them
