I think I ran into a rare stroke of luck. I have been given permission to use the back of Gunmakers' Hall to do high speed video of flintlocks at Friendship this spring. (This is the same equipment that we used to do the video you saw earlier this spring on You-Tube.) Grant Ferguson from Olympus Industrial and I will set up on June 11, the first Monday of the Spring Nationals. We hope to begin videoing locks late morning or noon. We hope to do as many locks as we can. Any lock you might have that has a center lock retaining hole can be mounted in my fixture.

Once we are set up, the process does not take much time. If your lock is much smaller or larger than typical, we may need to adjust the fixture. Our plan is to video as many locks as we can on Monday. When the session is over, we will write the files to a laptop and then burn the lock owner's file on a CD. You may pick up the CD at Gun Makers' Hall on Tuesday. We will not ask a fee for the disk, but if you want to make a donation to GunMaker's Hall, I'm sure it would be accepted.

I am especially thankful to Barbie Chambers and Dick Miller for allowing us to use Gun Makers' Hall to do this. Also a special thanks to Grant Ferguson, from Olympus for his contribution in time and equipment. It pleases me that we will hopefully learn new information in our study of flintlocks.

I look forward to seeing you at Friendship. Bring your flintlock and join in the study.

Regards,
Pletch

Attaboy!!!! :applause: :applause:
What a great project, and to bring it all together with plenty of notice (lead-time) deserves praise from everyone who will benefit from this effort.

Folks who shoot double barrelled guns will probably want to compare the speeds of the 2 locks.

GEEESH, I never thought about handling left-handed flints. I may have to rethink my fixture.

What a great idea!

Just to throw another log on the fire: perhaps some CD recipients will be willing to let their locks be posted on the Flintlocks forum, so we can all appreciate just how fast a well-tuned lock can be.

(I recently attended a local ML shoot, following shooters around a woods walk; I was surprised to see how little delay there is between flash and shot, and it prompted me to start my first flintlock rifle.)

BTW, any chance of a time measurement on the file so we can see how quickly things happen?

Best of luck on this very worthwhile endeavor.

There is number count running at the bottom, but I'm not sure what it represents. I will find out from Olympus.

pletch,
I don't think I can get there on Monday with my wheellock. It sounds like you may not be able to accomodate it anyway, without serious modification to your set up. It would have been a hoot though!  :v
God bless.

volatpluvia,
Do you know when you plan to get there? I'll be there until Wed am, I think. Look forward to talking with you.

Pletch,
If I just handheld it and fired it while you filmed. Would that work? I am not too concerned about getting accurate timing, or any timing at all, just a CD of it firing up. I would draw an X on the wheel so we could see the wheel turning more clearly. What fun! I will think hard about getting there (and pray).

Would you be able to do a short session on Wed. morning?

If the camera was mine, Wed would be fine, but the guy who owns the camera is leaving Monday pm.
I've wondered about holding a lock and firing it. If a guy rested his arms on the table to remain as steady as possible it might work. In that caselock retaining screw location woudl make no difference.

Got another idea. Sent a PT.

Pletch,
At the speed the camera runs you would see any shake in slow motion but there would be no blurring of the picture. However, I believe I could hold it steady enough by resting my wrists on the table.

So I would have to get there for Monday. Hmmnnn! :hmm:
Well, I really would like to do this. Once my mind starts cooking up a plan, it seldom gives up when I really want to do something. This is likely a one time opportunity. praying and thinking, okay?
