Flintlock I Have had a Long Long time....

Does anyone know the history of the maker G.B. White? The fit and finish is remarkable! Of all my B/P firearms, this is the only one I have not fired...a beauty to behold: She is 50 cal., swamped 42" bbl., even the patch box hole is chiseled, no drill marks. Simple, yet elegant!

That rifle was probably made by Dr. Gary B. White. aka, "Doc" White, the founder of Green River Rifle Works in Roosevelt, Utah. Doc is well into his 80's and still building rifles. Hard to say when he might have built that rifle, but it could be as early as the 1980's or 90's or as recent as the 2000's.

I haven't seen too many of his that he engraved his name on it. He usually just stamps his initials "GBW" somewhere on the barrel.

Phil: I did send him a note questioning if he was in fact the maker of this rifle...have not received an answer as yet.....hopefully will soon! I did send him photos as well. I will reply if I hear from him.

Dr. Gary B. White's inscription of his Lehigh Valley rifle #694 is:

"Here is a reproduction of a Lehigh rifle maybe by famous maker Dubbs, but previously attributed to Haines by Kindig. There is a C weight Colerain 44″ swamped barrel in 50 caliber in a AAA maple stock, lots of color! the flintlock is a Chambers, the trigger single as were most Lehigh Valley rifles, the patch box is a side opener with a spring loaded button in the middle of an engraved flower on the buttplate return. The chevron muzzle cap and the floral trigger are both nice touches. Sorry you can’t see the patchbox engraving.

The carving and engraving patterns was taken from an early Lehigh rifle, similar to what Dubbs would have done, indeed if not done by him. The original rifle is fitted with similar imported brass furniture as found on another signed Dubbs rifle."

When you go to Doc's website and click on the top right icon for "interview with doc"....one of his interesting statements is: "Probably the most functionally elegant arm of all is the Colt 1860 Army. What a wonderful, beautiful piece of toolcraft and utility in the same package."

"It's a dickert, made about 1980. doc Gary banks white."

I also have a DOC WHITE FOWLER that I got from TOTW, and I asked who he was and was told he made the first inlines, called the WHITE muzzle loading co.

The patchbox and chevron nose cap are the major Dickert parts I guess. Dickert incised chevron lines in a couple of nosecaps from known guns but the only repro from major sites are the poured ones as above. I have a similar part kit gun with the same parts. Wish mine had a swamped barrel though, and mine was done with totally different hind end architecture.

Doc White gun for sure. not shooting that gun is like having a young Raquel welch or Gina lollobrigida for a wife and saying "we are just friends" if you are to young to know who they are google them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Ok Ok.....will do.....I'll stoke her with 70 grains of FFG, prime her pan with FFFG, patch her with appropriate patch for .490 lead ball......and, and.....wait, I have other flintlocks, percussion and a double bbl. to burn powder; After holding, caressing and admiring her sweet self for 40+ years, I think I will just wait knowing she is still a virgin and keeps me happy non-the-less! Besides, I 'am almost twice her age and may need comforting company down the road ! I think my beautiful wife would give Raquel and Gina a run for their money...they are about the same age now.....

I like your thinking if you have plenty of guns to shoot doesn't hurt to have some that remain unfired. I have several guns unmentionable here that are even older than yours that have never fired and I intend to keep them that way. Also, a set of LePage dueling pistols that remain unfired, and unless someone challenges me to a duel they won't get fired...
