I recently purchased a flintlock that I thought was a Civil War relic. In fairness to the seller, the gun was advertised as “Unknown manufacturer, unknown model, unknown caliber”.

The gun measurers 56 inches overall. The barrel appears to be steel and measures 39 5/8 inches. The powder pan appears to be steel. There is no rear gun sight. There are three stampings on the barrel which appear to be a crown with “BP”, another with a crown and a “BV’ and a “15”.

Any assistance in identifying this flintlock would be appreciated.

If it's a flintlock it wouldn't be a Civil War gun. The percussion system had been around and common for about 35 years by the time of the CW. Unfortunately without photos we can only guess “Unknown manufacturer, unknown model, unknown caliber”.

BV & BP are proof marks from Birmingham England . Not that old post 1904 or so without looking it up Nothing Civil War but as Hawkeye says we better able with photos .

With its back action seemingly added too to make it flint Ide say it was old Surplus' got up' for the trade gun market .c 1910 maybe later . But a good example of what it is .Nothing wrong with it a good gun for what it is. All sorts of old muskets where altered for the trade gun market even Whitworth's got altered for that market . You gun was Ex continental European Hope that helps .
