What kind of Black Powder can I use in my Flintlock .45 pistol. Do I have to use 4F in the pan and 3F in the barrel or can I use 4F for both. New to Black Powder. Also, can I use the new Sub. powder?

Thanks for any help.

OK, NO ffffg (4fg) for loads...NEVER! It is fine for priming, or you can just use fffg (3fg)for both priming and loads. Substitute powders generally DO NOT work either for priming or loads as the ignition temp is much higher than black powder.

Use 3f for your load and 4f for priming. You can use 3f for priming also, experiment with that. It didn't work very well for me, I would get some fizzle-boom.

Stick with real black powder, the fake stuff will not work in a flint. Also use 3f in the barrel, and 4f or Swiss Nullbe as prime. You do not need a fizz--boom with a flint pistol. Never be able to hit anything. The faster ignition the better, that is why 3f in the pan is not good.

Hope this helps, see ya, Jim/OH :hatsoff:

Jim/OH,

Again, you come through on sage advice.

A friend loaned me a partial can of 7F, my scores went straight up. After the match he asked what I thought of it.

Response was, did loan me some powder and if you did you, are not getting it back? I promptly went and bought a can of NullB.

See?? I learned something here....again! Hope my pistol shooting improves when I get some NullB, I have plenty of 4fg also. I really don't hold a lot of hope though.
