I have wondered if the fluted cylinders on Italian BP replica revolvers, like a sheriff version, are correct for the 19th century time period. Is this historically correct or are fluted cylinders on BP replica revolvers just a marketed item added to a BP revolver? When did revolver cylinder fluting first appear and in what country? I was once told that the flutes were for reduction of a revolver weight and for finger indexing of the cylinder chamber at half cock. Do the flutes serve other functions?

The 1860 Colt was offered with a full fluted cylinder originally. Many crossbred replicas will offer nearly anything, correct or not. The grooves are not for any manual function.

They had 'em. I don't know the answers to all your questions but here is a picture of an 1860 with fluted cylinder in one of my books.
