I've had a hankerin' for a Lyman Deerstalker for a while now. I actually ordered a new one in flint several weeks ago, $400 with shipping from Midsouth, but I sent it back because the stock was warped. I got a refund instead of exchanging it because stuff suddenly came up and I needed the money. You know how that goes.

But I found a used capper today that was too good to pass up. The guy wanted $250 for it. I tried to talk him down to $200, but $225 was the lowest he would go, so I took it.

He had installed a Pachmayr Decelerator pad (which I wasn't too keen on at first, but it makes the length of pull perfect for me) and a Thompson/Center peep sight. It has the factory blade/white bead front and fold-down rear sight. The bore looks brand new. It was cleaned and oiled, so I could tell he takes care of his guns (so many used guns I look at are filthy).

I plan to replace the plastic bendystick with a hickory ramrod and put a leather sling on it. Oh, and it's a .54.

That peep was worth the small amount that you were dickering over. Nice rifle!

That looks like a TC White Mountain Carbine. If it is then the recoil pad is stock. Nice gun.

I suppose it could be, except for the words "Lyman" and "Deerstalker" stamped on the barrel.

This is a White Mountain Carbine...

That's virtually identical to my wife's, except for the recoil pad. It's scary accurate with about any powder charge she pours down the bore and tops with .530 balls and greased ticking patches. I tried to sneak 80 grains of 3f down the bore (by making her an 80 grain measure "mislabeled" as 60 grains) for more killing power, but she was wise to me. She went back to her old measure and proceeded to kill deer like crazy with 60 grains of 3f. She keeps her shots inside 50, so obviously the extra "power" isn't needed.
