I recently came across an original fowler (french) with long tang, it appears there is no retaining pin or wood screw on the.

From what research I’ve done, it seems like there was some type of hook and post beneath the tang.

Does anyone have any pictures of this setup ? I’m curious, preparing for a fowler kit in 2023.

Thanks

a pin in the stock and a slot cut in the foward butt plate tab that hooked under the pin, lower screw locks it down. i think

No in this pattern, the tang has no pin hole, curious as to how its locked in without a pin.

This is a log cabin shop butt plate, the tang lug looks like it has a hook shape to it, but i can’t seem to understand how its secured without a pin, if there’s a base catch to it, how is it secured in the stock?

hi nick, see the little notch in the forward tab? thats what slides under the pin . hold a pin in between your thumb and index finger and put the plate up to it. you will see how it goes . the pin stays in the stock on removal. of the plate. hope that helps. mike. ps is the 1766 french done yet? :thumb:

Hey mike ! I’m waiting on a trigger plate and side plate, otherwise just getting started on it. Was hoping to use the rifle shopp’s 1774 charleville lock castings set but its been over a year and I have an extra 1766 Miroku lock, which is likely much better. So going with the miroku lock on this project and going to make it a 1768 charleville. See picture

You can use and L shaped nail or position a screw under the buttplate that will engage that hook and not have to use a pin at all,.
There is a "how to" Youtube video on this by Clay Smith, that shows Clay making such a buttplate tang attachment. No pin, just a notched nail driven in to the stock for the buttplate tang hook.

I converted a Miroko 1766 Charleville to a 1728 model with the help of a Kit Ravenshere (sp?) converted French lock. Kit's lock has an "S" shaped cock. I've used this for over 40 yars...no problems yet.
My original Miroku lock was converted to a doglock by Jim Everett.
