Is fowling actually fouling? The answer is yes, :winking: the usage & spelling of the word "fowling" should be spelled "fouling". Somehow, the misuse or misspelling of a certain word gets started and before you know it, everybody is using & spelling the word wrong. Looking it up it my handy dictionary (yes, it still hangs around), I found it, the word "foul". It's simply defined as deposit, incrustation. I hate being the stickler, but the meaning of the word "fowl" is a bird of any kind. A "fowling piece" is a light bird gun. But those words have absolutely nothing to do with the deposits or incrustation that is left behind in muzzle loading gun barrels from shooting black powder or their substitutes. Have a nice day and try not to let your gun barrel get too "fouled" up with "fouling"! :peace:

Hello Arcticap,

Ah... er... I'm rather new to this forum, but not muzzleloading... I did not this fouling vs fowling was a issue :youcrazy:

I will admit poorly cooked fowl will leave a foul taste in my mouth... :winking:

Cheers,

DT

:sorry:I left out the "ing" when I defined the word fouling (above), and typed foul instead. That word has several meanings including to become encrusted, clogged or choked with a foreign substance, dirty. :hatsoff:

A fouled fowling piece, is foul to clean, just like the fowl you get with it.

I use wonder lube products and dont have any manure in or on my rifle.

Are the roundballs called "foul balls" if shot through a fouler? :hmm:

why didn't this reply surprize me musketman ..........bob

I suppose the correct way would be to say "The fowl fouled me." Rather than say I was s**t on by that pigeon... :)

A time back a pitcher threw a pitch and the ball hit a pigeon and killed it. What was it a fowl or foul ball? Evertime you think you get life figured out someone has to foul, I mean fowl, or was it foul, nevermind, mess it up. I am going out to shoot my fowler or is it fouler, ok it is now going to be called my Tulle. Hopefully the word Tulle won't be change until I get back from shooting.
Thanks for the info it gives me a reason to get out and shoot, like I needed one. ::

The word "Tulle" will still be the name of a town in France, not a type of gun...

TG, how is your supply of pearls holding up these days?I'm about to exhaust mine and don't really know when or where I can restock.

I ran out of pearls and have of late been using cheep glass marbles.....

TG, what are you using the pearls for? Are you putting them in stocks? I have some imitation pearl beads. if you can use some. They do have a hole through them for thread, but that could be put to the sides. If interested PM me you address and i will ship some up to you to see if you can use them.

Along with pearls, and swine, hopefully not the flying kind. There is the fowl that be a baby horsey. They leave around fouling that require you to wear mucking boots, much like this thread has turned into. :shake: :boohoo:  :blah:Bill
