A good friend of mine gave me a 54 caliber Renegade late Sunday evening. Boy was I surprised! It had belonged to his Granddaddy and he had no sentimental attachment to it. Also gave me powder, and bullets. Anyone have recomendations on a good load for this rifle? I have a 50 caliber Hawkins, 45 caliber Tennessee, and a 58 caliber Springfield that I've killed several deer with. Any input on the Renegade would be much appreciated. By the way, this Renegade is Super Nice, has the double set triggers.

My deer hunting loads in TC .54cal Hawkens are 90grns Goex FFFg or 120grns FFg, Hornady .530's, Oxyoke wonder wad, and TC .018" prelubed pillow ticking patches. Targets are 60grns FFFg / 80grns FFg without wonder wads

Where can I find some friends like that? You have a mighty fine selection of ML rifles. I want a collection just like yours when I grow up.

About your Renegade loads! I have found, for some strange reason I don't understand, T/C Renegades/Hawkens are notorious for liking cotton patches over the pillow tickers. I read posts pertaining to that all over this country (18 BP/ML websites). My (2) Renegades are the same way. Both of mine prefer the .020 Ox Yoke pre-lubed cottons. Even when I shoot the Minies in it, accuracy improves when I wrap the Minie with an .005 cotton. I've also tested Pyrodex P, Goex FFF & 777 FFF with both rifles. 777 was the clear winner. Go Figure!

manure!! :curse:

I thought I was going to get a free rifle by looking at this thread. :boohoo:

My .54 caliber Renegade likes 90 grains of FFg and a patched roundball. This rifle shoots better groups with a wonderwad then without, but the difference is only about 1/4 to 1/2 inch difference at 50 yards.

When shooting conicals, I drop the charge a little and shoot 80 grains of FFg. This is a real Whitetail nightmare. The deer I have hit with a 300 grain R.E.A.L. conicals and 80 grains have only went in one direction and thats down...

I hope someday my friends call me and tell me they have excellent rifles to give away. I will be over to their place in a heartbeat. Nice rifle!
