French Grey or Pewter barrel finish

Does anyone know how to obtain a dull grey finish on locks and barrels? Thanks

Polish the metal to a 400 grit then coat with a heavy covering of naval jelly..wait for 24 hrs then wash of with hot water with baking or washing soda in it, using a steel wool pad if needed to get the crust off then blow dry with a hair dryer and oil with wd 40 or somthing similar...try a test spot on the underside first to see if it is what you are looking for.

There is a slight mottled efect but no real pitting on the ones I have done, as I said try a test spot or try an old piece of similar steel to see if it works for your needs.
