Hey fellers, here's the latest creation to come out our shop. Had a piece of elk tine, some HC steel and a little pewter. So I thought that should make a nice friction knife. After it was done I did some antiquing so it wouldn't look like a flatlander owned it.
Then Miss Tudy said it should have something to carry it in so she made a nice pouch out of some buffalo hide.
Well there you have it all finished. Hope y'all enjoy it...Bud & Miss Tudy

Thanks fellers. We enjoy making them...

great looking work Bud and Miss Tudy. But I got a question. Does Miss Tudy make the bags and then tell you to fill them or do you make the knifes and then ask her real nice to make a bag for it?? :hmm: :hmm:

Well, most times I make what I like and then she does the sheath and does what she wants. Oter times she tells me what she wants to do and then I make a knife to fill the bill and then 1% of the time we do what a cust wants, but not too often...Bud

Bud, I collect pictures of original items from the 18th century/Rev War period and I have some of folding knives. These are from the Tom Wnuck estate auction. I thought you might like to see them, maybe to mine some ideas. Or not.

Nifeman: That's a fine piece you made. Is the friction adjustable as the antler wears?

Spence: Awesome photos of some fascinating knives. Thanks for sharing!

Where did this type of folder get its origins. France?

Twice.
While I'm not really sure where this type was used, I did a search and came up with this...

The earliest known pocket knives date to at least the early Iron Age. A pocketknife with bone handle was found at Hallstatt, dating to around 600-500 BC.[3] They remained quite rare until modern times compared to fixed-blade knives. For most of history, knives were worn inside sheaths or scabbards attached to the belt. Pockets in clothing are a relatively modern invention. Before this, pockets or pouches were attached to belts, in which these early folding knives would have been carried. In recent times, it has become illegal to carry fixed-blade knives in certain jurisdictions, which has made pocket knives much more common.
