This looks like an large size Bess. 1 inch bore and gun alone weighs 47 pounds. Park ranger said it was used for long range sniping. Any one have accurate information on something like this.

Our unit has a Long Range Musket. Its a smoothbore.

The placard has the simple description.

Impressive piece of artillery.

It is crew served.

Used a 1" diameter ball and a lot of powder. We have have shot it with ball. Mostly this Rifle Shoppe replica fires blanks.

Thanks for the info. I guessing the 1.5 oz is weight. So 656 grains of powder and a 1600 grain roundball. Any idea on muzzle velocity?

Would be fun to fire this musket across a body of water just to watch the big ball skip out of sight. I did this with a small cal. squirrel rifle on a totally dead calm and empty section of the Monongehela River in S.W. Pa. . The balls instantly skipped out of sight. Experimental fun........oldwood
