Attended my first ever fruit shoot today! What a BLAST! Targets ranged from potatoes & apples to easter candy "peeps" and even cherry tomatoes and grapes :haha: . Not the easiest targets to hit for sure. Distance was approx. 25 yds. My Son Andy & I used our lyman trade rifles .50 cal with 70 gr. 3F and a .490 PRB.

The little donuts exploded and the small carrot sticks were shreaded...the deer are eating good tonight! The grape that I hit was skewered onto a finishing nail that the PRB folded over.

This North Jersey BP group that we joined sure has alot of fun. Nice folks too!

Can't wait for the next month's shoot!

Hmmmmmm that sounds like a lot opf fun! I can think of a few fruits that I'd like to take a shot at. :hmm:

Tut, tut, there JiminTexas, next thing know you will be wanting to bash up small bundles of wood. :winking:

It was recently suggested to take some plastic Easter eggs and to fill them with some flour to use as reactive targets. Since I have a bagful of empty ones, I decided to give it a try this past week and they worked great. Alternating shots with a paper target, I didn't break too many eggs, but it was especially satisfying whenever a shot did hit home at ~35 yards.

We've taken little cloth bags (the one's about the size of what the old timers used when they rolled their own)and put flour in them. Then we would tie them on a blow down - when you hit them, the powder just flies. This we did at a distance of about 40 yards. :shocked2:

A good time was had by all! This is the same location as the Gong shoot the end of February. The 135 yd. Gong is always there, hanging from a tree...it deserved to be hit too :) . In February I hit it with the Walker :shocked2: and turned a couple of heads!

One of the other targets at yesterday's shoot was a paper "pizza" complete with little pepperonis, anchovie, and for a little added flavor a fly! Trying to hit a fly at 25 yds. was very interesting...these old eyes could hardly see the meat, let alone a fly speck at 25 yds!

Most of the guys in this club use them Flinchlocks, and they can hit with them too!

After the shoot, the club runs a regular business meeting at a local Pub & Burger joint where the good times continue! Someone there was selling BP Goex for $11.20 a pound, inc. shipping & hazmat fee!

Wish some of my friends on the Forum could have been there too! All the best,

Dave

We shot at lemons limes and oranges at a shoot once...Most pleasent smelling woodswalk I ever been to :applause:

Don't forget the Oreo's.
Em critters need some desert when their done munching on the regular food.
zonie :)

My club's 100 yard gong was an old fashioned H2O fire extinguisher hanging from a chain. It was way more forgiving toward elevation error than it was for holding windage.

Frosty,

The Garden State Black Powder Association meets all the way up in Vernon NJ just about 3 mi. shy of the upstate NY border. For you that would be 2.5 hours of solid driving or so from the Mt. Holly area. The shoots start at 10:00 AM, so if you got up at 6:00 and on the road by 7:00, you'd make it!

This by the way is the only BP group from NJ listed in Muzzleblasts magazine.

The other group that I belong to does a novelty shoot occasionally at their regular monthly shoots on the first Sunday of the month in Old Bridge, Middlesex County, NJ. That shoot starts at 9:00 AM for pistols/revolvers and at about 10:30 for rifles.

The north Jersey group is the second BP group that my Son Andy & I shoot at on a regular basis.

Hope to see you at one of the events,

Dave

Oreo's and lemons & limes...Wow! Maybe we could get Nabisco as a sponsor :shocked2: ...just kidding!

The grapes were the hardest to see/hit...had to cover the entire target with the front sight blade and hold real still and watch your breathing too!

Dave

The gong at 135 yds. is what looks like 2 compressed gas tanks cut in half with the two top halves beeing welded together to almost present a square target to hit. It also swings from a tree via a length of chain.

On windy days it's alot harder to hit than you might first think! Real FUN though!
