While huting deer this year I had the opportunity to speak with a guide who also guides black bear hunting. Now I've hunted two black bear with centerfires. It was spot and stalk with the closest being shot at 125 yrds. They were both taken in Canada.

I've been wanting to take one with a ML. I'm thinking about a bear hunt he offers in the US. In the morning they use hounds and tree the bear. Now that will get me close enough for a ML shot. In the afternoon they use bait. Basically pour it on the ground at the base of a tree.

He said they build a log cabin (more like a log out house). He said the bear are usually only about 14 yards away with at the bait. I'd like to try this as I like bear meat and the color of the bears in this area are mostly brown, blond and other phases. Of the 30 bears last year only three were black in color. I'm also thinking about keeping the fat to render at home.

I know you don't need a huge calib. but I'd like to use my .62 cal. Underhammer. Anyone here take a black bear with a ML?

Took a small black bear last year with a .54 flintlock and PRB at about 50 yards (my avatar is a picture of one I passed on, the one I shot was about the same size). It pretty much just rolled over a died. Your .62 should have no trouble with even a large bear.

gmww,
If you do your part a .62 is more than
enough for any black bear you mite encounter,
unless he is in your sleeping bag :rotf:

Snake eyes, that conjurs up memories that aint funny. I had taken a group of Eagle Scouts up into the Sangre de Cristos in Colorado for their 60 mile hike badges. It was hot and we had left the front of our tents open, and I woke up to what I'd say was a 300# blackie in the tent trying to get into my sleepin bag with me.

I dont know about a .62 in that case, but I can verify that a .45 Colt will give them the dirt nap when discharged right under their jaw.

I use a .50cal Herschel House rifle using 72gr 3f,PRB. IMO double lung shots are best bet,tho I've head shot 'em also and like that pretty well if within maybe 30 or so yards. The .50cal is adequate, but I moved up to a .60cal for this season. Hunted three days a week or so ago but no luck. Drug a scent rag over the mountain and boiled grease, but no luck. This is the third year in a row the acorn crop has been extremely high so the bears can make a living about anywhere.

Hey, still had the picture in Photobucket. Note the clever use of camera angles to make it look bigger. Might come in handy someday  .
