A Fine and important oval-barrelled Russian flintlock sporting gun by G. Kuprin, Tula, circa 1765.
Formed of a signed, sighted, oval bored barrel of elliptical form, superbly decorated at the breech with chiselled and gold-encrusted rococo ornament. The rounded lock with sliding safety-catch decorated en suite with the barrel, gold-lined vent. The figured walnut full-stock with raised cheek-piece on the butt, finely carved behind the breech and on the underside of the fore-end, profusely inlaid with silver wire rococo scrolls and with horn fore-end cap. The burnished steel mounts including butt-plate, trigger-guard, side-plates and ramrod-pipes decorated en suite with the lock and barrel and retaining original horn-tipped wooden ramrod of oval section.

Out of curiosity, which way is the barrel eliptical? Elongated horizontally or vertically?
