Hello -

I recently picked up a small .44 BP pistol at a gun show. The seller described it as a "gambler's pistol". Here's a picture of it: http://www.riversidescouts.com/files/44.pistol.jpg

I believe that the pistol is fairly modern in manufacture. I haven't found any info or photos of a period piece that is similar, so I doubt if it is a reproduction. There is a serial number, but no markings of a manufacturer that is evident. The nipple is for #11 caps. It seems to take a small .44 ball... probably .433, although I haven't shot it yet.

Does anyone know anything about this type of pistol? Any info would be appreciated!

Looks similar to these screw barrel "derringers" from Pedersoli. http://www.davide-pedersoli.com/ArmiCategoria.aspx?CategoriaId=125&lang=en I've never seen one with a ramrod attached to the barrel though. I guess these were fairly common hide-out guns in the 19th century. I'd probably go with a .429 ball/.015 patch or .433 ball/.010 patch. I have no idea of a suitable charge size. Wish I could offer more info. Nice little gun.

I have 2 of these kits. Dixie Gun Works still sells them. They are listed as Classic Arms New Orleans Ace Pistol Kit. They have 6 different models from this company. My kits say "made in korea" on the box.
The Dixie catalog says the load should be...12 gr. of FFFg, .433 round ball, .015 patch, and #11 caps.

That's it! Thanks to both of you!
By a quick google search, based on what you've told me, I found that the Possible Shop sells one that looks just like it (American made too). I'll get some .433 balls and give it a try (but NOT at a gambling table...)

I finally tried that little gambler's gun... it shoots pretty good with 15 gr FFFg, .433 balls and .10 patches. Darned hard to hit anything however.... but a lot of fun!

Here's my gambler's gun, someone has removed the loading lever and it's catch then filed off the foresight. A little .32 Bacon
