getting back in to flintlocks

ordered a traditions deer hunter flintlock 50 cal.. got a lyman great plains .. stop shooting the lyman a few years ago . it shoots good. man is it heavy. found a place close that sells goex black powder 25 dollars a pound. without paying the hazmat ... hope the traditions shoots good done a search about it most says it a good muzzleloader.. what size is the touch hole liner on the deerhunter??? does it need to be drilled out bigger??? my lyman is drilled out to 1/16 it been a few years since i shot it .. it went off most of the time.. the sights are hard to see late in the evening bad eyes old age i weld for a living that dont help.. the sights on the tradition are fiber optic that should help a lot... order 6 new flints dont thank it comes with a flint ?? hope to shoot it this weekend.. muzzleloader season starts nov 9 going to try and get a deer with it this year last few year wasnt been all that good hunting wise i live in tennessee thanks michael

Welcome from Missouri! I don't know much about the traditions deer hunter, but I have 3 GPRs! They are on the heavy side, but I like their balance. That being said, I'll probably be using my .45 for deer season.... even with a full stock, it's lighter than the GPRs. As long as you don't have far to walk or very many hills, a feller would be fine.

If it was me, I'd drill out the vent hole to 1/16" only after shooting. If it works , don't try to fix it!

got more hills then a can count. most place is a long walk in there will shot it first and see how it does before i drill it out

McGhee I also welded for a living and wore glasses since the age of 6. My eye doc sent me for lens replacement surgery. Fantastic I can see again without glasses. The only trouble I had was for the first 6 months I kept trying to push my glasses back up. After 60 something years habits are hard to break.

Glad to see you are getting back into it. But.
$25 a pound? When it goes on sale at Graf and Son you can get it for $15. Order 5 cans and you would be good for years. I've even gotten free shipping from them on occasion.
Just sayin.

My brother just got the same rifle. One thing we found while trying it out, was that it liked the agate flints! I have a Trad. PA Pellet and a Lyman Trade rifle. Agates don't spark worth a darn in either. But mu brothers Deerhunter loves agates. Weird.
He shot really nice groups right out of the gate and got scary fast ignition every time. Hope yours works the same! Good hunting!

Same here, I have to use reading glasses. I am sure to wear safety glasses and uv rated sun glasses.


The traditions flinter works good, but still could use a tune up, polish surfaces, make sure the frizzen seals on the pan and is flush. I have found some that need a stronger frizzen spring, but they were on kit rifles.

Sorry, but not a fan of Traditions guns. Dinky little locks that are IMO too small for the guns. Use 5\8 flints. Anything bigger and you've got problems. Not too well made either.

Yes they shoot but IMO there are better guns out there.

got to shot it today about 15 shot's. fail to fire one time.. need to fix the flinching issue.. for a 275 dollar flintlock it goes off fast... shot 490 dia hornady and a 015.thk patch. found most of the patches one had a hole in it shooting 60 gr of 3 fff using 3fff in the pan .. going to take the lyman GPR with me next time i hope this sunday... any way to fix the trigger on it??? its a heavy pull 5lbs maybe more..

You will shoot even better the next time.

Your Lyman GPR should have an adjustment for firing the set trigger. That's the small screw between the two triggers. As far as lightening the trigger pull to fire using the front trigger unset, there is little to be done other than install the Davis replacement triggers.
