GETTING TO KNOW YOU
Getting to know all about you as the old song said.
When you first get your rifle a great elongated barrel heavy
awkwardness, particularly so to us under ten footers.
As you work up your first loads it becomes more comfortable to handle. It's probably your muscles are adjusting to it; ungainly structure. After hunting season or the Fall zeroing sessions you can put it away and forget about much of what you've learned, or as some do at this time of year when the hunting seasons are over, you spend some time polishing it up or just letting the natural browning ease into beauty that perhaps only you can sew.
If you spend year 'round time. taking care of your friend all that awkwardness is gone. It used to be way to barrel heavy but that seems to have diminished. and old Smokey has become something of a part of you and is no more weird to hold come Spring than your right arm.
I gave my rifles to my grandson who has little interest as I with my vision have no reason to be on or near a rifle range or out in the field with them,
But I miss them.
Dutch Schoultz

There is no off season for me Dutch. I like shooting and I don't give it up because there's no hunting season. We can shoot in National Forest here and I love simulating hunting. A knot in a stump is a good target from all different angles.

The Rockies at 11,000ft is my playground.

At least for now, I spend some time at least once a week making white smoke, if naught for other things, just to tear some holes in paper or make the steel sing to me. I have had a tendency the last few years to not put as much pressure on me as I once did, not making a great deal of multi-hole groups and dirt kickers. Also have had a tendency to shoot closer than I used to, close enough that a pair of simple binoculars are all that is needed to find that last shot. I also have discovered that the real joy is doing what I have always enjoyed but doing it in a much more tranquil state of mind. If I go out and shoot 10 rounds it is just as much pleasure as shooting a 50 or a hundred. And home to clean and oil, time I once did because I had to, is now time I want to spend, taking my time and enjoying the day before settling down to an Ezra and tonic. I rarely watch the news and never watch the newer TV political and social re-engineering shows, especially since all of those now seem to push homosexuals, immoral affairs, lying, cheating and otherwise disgusting things and attempt to label those of us that find such things disgusting as anti-social or hate mongers. I am old enough to know right from wrong and was taught values from the beginning of life. Those are no longer taught to the younger generation.
So for now, I join Dutch in enjoying the company my guns - both real and remembered. I will add to that list and not in any particular order, my Bible, My wife, My Ezra Brooks and my Dog.
Life - even as restrictive as it has become, is still good. So for your Dutch, and for me - Let's enjoy what we can and remember all the good things we have and have had as they are still a part of us.

WHEN HITCH HIKING IN WYOMING IN 1945 AND 46 . I NOTICED THAT WHEN STICKING YOUR HAND, CUPPED, OUT A CAR WINDOW MOVING AT 60 MPH THERE WAS VERY LITTLE BACK PRESSURE. AE 11 THOUSAND FEET THERE SGOULD BE NONE AT ALL AND THAT LACK OF WIND RESISTENCE WOULD STRONGLY AFFECT THE FLIGHT OF ANY BALL OR BULLET.
WHAT CORRECTIONS DO YOU MAKE FOR THAT DIFFERENCE?
BREATHING MUST TAKE SOME GETTING USED TO AS WELL.

I live at 8000ft, so going to 11,000ft doesn't affect me too much. I go there so much there's no adjustment I need to make for a hunt.

As for sighting in. I do it at the altitude I plan to hunt at. You're right. It does change at altitude.

I TAKE IT THAT YOU ARE NOT MARRIED OR IF YOU ARE SGE ONE IN TEN THOUSAND.

I don't shoot as much as I'd like. It's 35 miles to my club and about 45 miles to a safe shooting site on NF.

I like to do like the Old Man does and rove while shooting at targets of opportunity.

MY RANGE I USED FOR YEARS WAS SWEPT OUT OF EXISTENCE IN THE 90'S BY FLOODS. THAT MADE THE CLOSEST RANGE 40 OR SO MILES AWAY.

I HAVE LONG ENVIED THE FOLKS WITH A 50 OR 100 RANGE STARTING AT THEIR BACK PORCH.

You and I both, Dutch.

My club was ten minutes away until it was swept away by suburban development. :(

IT JUST OCCURRED TO ME THAT ALL OF US LIKING THE OLD DAYS AND THEOLD WAYS HAVE CONVERTED US INTO THOSE WHO ARE NOT
COOL.
BEING COOL APPARENTLY BELIEVES IN SHEDDING ALL OR MOST OF THE OLD VALUES. I THINK I AM REGARDED AS SOMETHING SIMILAR TO AN ABTIQUE ARTIFACT.
ON TUESDAY I WILL TAKE DELIVERY OFA 15 MPH ELECTRIC SCOOTER WITH A 9 MILE RANGE AND A 9 HOUR RECHARGE TIME.
MY CAR WAS STOLEN JUST BEFORE IT WAS TO BE TAKEN AWAY. ANY SHOPPING REQUIRES MAKING "ARRANGEMENTS".
I BELIEVE I AM CIRCLING THE DRAIN. HOWEVER AS I BUZZ ABOUT THE FLATTER PART OF MY BEIGHBORHOOD LOOKING LIKE A LARGE RED BUG I WILL TAKE PRIDE IN THE FACT THAT I AM FAR FROM COOL IN THE CURRENT SENSE.
I WILL PROBABLY GET RUN OVER BY A GIANT TRASH TRUCK AND IF THAT WON'T BE POETIC JUSTCE I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS.
15 MPH IS TWICE NORMAL WALKING SPEED. CAN YOU IMAGINE?

THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN BOTH MY PRIMARY RIFLES GOT THEIR ANNUAL RUB DOWN WITH LINSEED OIL THINNED WITH A DOLLOP OF TURPENTINE TO ENCOURAGE PENETRATION. I WOULD RIB WITH MY BARE HAND TILL I FELT HEAT AND COULD SEE THAT SOFT GLOW COMING BACK.
I LEARNED FROM AN ITALIAN FURNITURE MAKER THAT THEY WOULD HAND RUB ALL SORTS OF FURNITURE THIS WAY AS MUCH AS 27 TIMES BEFORE CONSIDERING IT FINISHED WITH AS MUCH AS A MONTH BETWEEN RUBS,
THEY TOLD ME THIS WAS THE IDEAL FINISH AND VARNISH OR LAQUER WERE JUST WOOD DRYING SUBSTITUTES,.
THEY ARE NOT GETTING THE RUBDOWN THIS YEAR AND I;M NOT GETTING THAT WARM FEELING,
EVERYBODY BEGINS WITH A MIDDLEOR LOWER PRICED RIFLE. WHEN THEY SEE HOW MUCH FUN THEY AN BE THEY BUY A MORE EXPENSIVE RIFLE, I GOT UP TO 9 DIFFERENT RIFLES. BEFORE I REALIZED THAT I HAD BEEN "CARRIED AWAY". AS OF THIS DATE I HAVE GIVEN SIX AWAY AND ONE, THE 1863 SPRINGFIELD, IS ON LOAN TO SOMEONE WHO IS SUPPOSED TO PASS IT ON TO SOMEONE ENTERING THE NATIONAL ML TRYOUTS FOR MATCHES REQUIRING ORIGINAL RIFLES.. SO THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS I COULD SEE ANY DISTANCE I HAD ONLY THE KIT BUILT TC HAWKEN WITH THE LONGER BARREL AND THE EXACT DUPLICATE OF AN ACTUAL ST LOUIS HAWKEN I HAD ATUALLY HELD.

THESE GOT ENDURING CARE AND THEY REPAID ME BY GIVING ME PEFECT RESULTS AND NOW THEY, TOO, ARE GONE.

I have had to learn a few things as I get along in life.
The most important thing has been to remember that happiness is a choice we make!!!! It ain’t easy that’s for sure but it does help to make that choice when things are getting tough.
I think there are a few things in everyone’s life they can do that will make a bad time better!
Gus, I hope you can find a piece in your collection to give your attention or maybe the new scooters going to need to be polished!!
Hope your going to enjoy speeding around.!

THERE'S NOT MUCH THERE TO POLISH.
IT'S NO WIDER THAN MY NARROW SHOULDERS
I FEEL A SUDDEN URGE TO GET ONE OF THOSE WW I GERMAN HELMETS WITH A GOLD SPIKE ON TOP. EIN PICKELHAUB. THEN THE MAIDENS AND SMALL DOGS WILL HAVE TO LOOK OUT.IT ISN'T TO BE EXPECTED TO PERFORM WELL ON HILLS AND THIS ISN'T TOTALLY FLAT GROUND AROUND HERE SO I MAY SOON BE SEEN BEING TOWED HOME BT TWO SMALL CCHLDREN ON SKATES.

I WAS SURPRISED MY DAUGHTER PUT UP NO OBJECTIONS.

Isn't it amazing how they try so hard to keep us from an interesting demise?

Im still able to do some things that I shouldn't "at my age" so all is not lost. The wife doesn't object to any of my bad choices, but then again, I'm over insured. :)
