Love this flat day horn...
came with a straight oct tip(last inch)
re-did to follow horn lines....
Had a yellowish finish...would like to know what others use to achieve that that color.
Another fine JL piece.perfect size for hunting with the 40,36 cal.
pouring bench--300 fresh .395's more powder more lead!

...cool! What wood ??? I have been using 100 plus year old fence post wood. Osage and Locust. There so hard..and colorful? Great grain.

I use Rit dye. A box of Yellow with just a touch of Tangerine should give you a nice color. If you want a darker yellow you might use a little Brown.
Heat the dye up after mixing it per the instructions and put the horn in while its hot. Finished color will depend on how long you leave it in.

Looks like a 5 year old did the scrim, And not a very talented one at that!
BTW, The tip looks nice!

Very attractive horn.

Two ways. One just use and handle, it will turn real purty naturally fairly quickly. Two: rub with Neatsfoot oil. Easy to do and lasts. But, IMHO, not needed. The natural way, to me, is far preferable.

That was Yellow with a good pinch of Brown, But dont leave it too long in the hot bath, It was a lot flatter than it is now before going in the dye.
Have you encountered that before Ron?

James gets all the credit...Thanks for the reply's!

James for your first attempt it's pretty cool!
Just felt the oct tip took away from the lines.
Thanks again it's a keeper....
Just forged a staple out of a square nail we took out of the beams of the shack..It's previous live was a 1905 vintage tool shed.
will send pic's when completed.

Yes, that will happen if you let it get to hot in the dye. I don't usually get my dye that hot but I have had it happen.
