i used to hunt flintlock about 20+ years ago. i used a lh lyman deerstalker(50 cal) and patched roundballs(i loved faulkenberry juice, discontinued :(, )

i casted up some maxiballs(pure lead) and i lube them with 1 part beeswax, 1 part wax, 3 tlsp of alox and 3 tlsp of vaseline(crisco/lanolin can be used). i have shot them(70 - 90gr) and 75gr of 2f goes roughly 2"+/-(alot of +'s in there :haha: ) at 50 yards. not as good as the patched rb were(under a 1" at 50 yards) but they are good enuff for hunting deer.

i was just sitting around and a question came into my head. can i use wonder/vegetable filler/ wool wads in my 50 cal?

Maxi-Ball and REAL shooters often report enhanced accuracy with a felt or yardstick wad atop the powder charge/under the Maxi- or REAL. It certainly works in my fast twist .50cal. bbl.

Also, your home-brewed lube with Alox, wax, and Vaseline may be opening your groups. Beeswax and Crisco alone often work well, as does Stumpy's Moose Snot (my favorite "grease" lube!).

you're probably right on the home brewed. i was just looking to see if it worked on a pan lube. i just don't like tc bore butter, its a mess.

do i use lubed wads or unlubed wads?

That is some interesting concoction you have there for a lube. It might work but there are many others out there simpler and easier to make that will work fine for you.
not as good as the patched rb

If the round ball worked well for you, why mess with success???
Oh, well, a simple lube some kind of wad (felt, cardboard, etc.) behind the maxi thingy should produce OK results. I still don't understand why. :idunno:

i shot about 7 or 8 or maybe more deer with the patched rb. every one of them dropped or was found at about 10-15 yards from the shot. the deer were shot at ranges from 20-50 yards. back then, i used faulkenberry juice on my patch. when the guy who made it retired(?), faulkenberry juice(i tried to home brew it) was no more. i tried to use crisco, spit, 1/2 beeswax and 1/2 crisco, some commercial lube..... i could never find the accuracy i used to have. if you would know me back then, over a 1" group was unthinkable. it "had" to under 1". nowadays, 3 to 4" at 100 yards(open sights) is good enuff for me.

the 1 part beeswax, 1 part wax, 3 tlsp of alox and 3 tlsp of vaseline is an offshoot to smokeless cast boolits. its 1lb of paraffin, 1lb of beeswax, 13oz of vaseline, 3 or 4 tlsp of stp and a crayon or two
( for color, you don't have use it ).

oh yeah, maxi balls, why do i use maxis instead of rb? i have done the patched rb. it is undoubtedly a deer killer. i have no reason to go the maxi ball, but.....i never shot a deer with a maxi ball and i have an old lee mould that casts maxi balls....soooooooo i just figured........ :stir:

That makes sense. My son and grandson want to take one w the PH Enfield 2 band (Birmingham proof) to see what a 550 gr minie over 60 gr FFg will do. They’ve seen the effect of a .535 PRB of 235 gr pushed w 90 gr FFg.

Not even surprising that something I never heard of isn't around anymore.... :haha:

I might know a guy that has the recipe....I'm sure it's probably for sale, (all things are) unless it died with the owner.

I think there are better options though..

Half the fun is coming up with your own concoction to drive your shooting partners nuts.

the last time i bought faulkenberry juice was in the fall of 1988(i think for a case it went $40-50? i bought 3 or 4 cases). i kept on using fbj till 1999. fbj was a lube/cleaner and it did not affect unfired black powder. but fbj sure was a fired bp cleaner.

i was "trying" to do a "fbj substitute" but i failed. fbj was a pinkish type "water" that sticks like vaseline. i'd try transmission fluid with some alcohol(90 - 99%), transmission fluid with paraffin......it just failed me and i went somewhere else, like archery.

now here it is 2018, i'm into smokeless/bp cast boolits and i want to do something else. i have a ml, maxi ball mould and some bp. what i don't have is pan lube. and that part comes a challenge!!!
