anyone tried green mountain barrels? i have a hawken .50 and could be interested in a .54 if the reviews are good. do they fit right in? the have a .54 in 15/16 which i would need i heard you should look for 1" when going over .50 cal? thanks for the input

Well, here's my experience so far;
Recently I purchased a Green Mountain .32 barrel thru Track of the Wolf. Had them modify it to "fit" my Lyman GPR. When it arrived I found that it had a helicoil insert in the nipple hole. GM says it is "a perfectly acceptable repair". I was not happy with any "repair" on my new barrel so I sent it to GM for a new breech plug. They replaced it with a breech plug with no helicoil. Good Deal!
I just got it back the other day. It still didn't "drop in" my GPR. The mods by TOW were good. Only had to peen the lugs down a touch to tighten up on the wedges. BUT FIRST I had to file the tang hook about 1/32 before the barrel would lower into the channel. My hammer still doesn't hit the nipple even close enough to work. I'll have to fit another hammer to the gun so I can switch barrel/hammer combos. I guess I'm satisfied...

In the meanwhile, I bought another GM barrel from Cains 'cause it was a good deal. This one is a .62 smoothbore "Drop In" for a T/C Renegade. It's WORSE than the first one! I'm going to have to cut 1/8 off of the rib so it will fit. The clean-out screw is AWOL! And the breech plug is JUNK! This one also has a helicoil insert in the nipple hole and it is NOT EVEN STRAIGHT IN THE HOLE! The nipple doesn't even sit flush with the top of the snail! I'll be sending this one back to GM for a new breech plug too. :cursing:

I have not yet been able to fire the barrels so can't say as to how they shoot. They dang well better shoot pretty good after all this trouble! If I ever get 'em in shootable condition... :shake:

I keep hearing similar complaints about GM barrels. I want to order a .58 barrel for my Renegade but I feel I would be better off going with a TC/Fox Ridge barrel. I would rather have the slow twist of the GM, but I don't want to deal with helicoil or nipple alignment problems I keep reading about.

I have a few of these barrels.

1) The helicoil is a cheesy repair that I was not happy with. Mine extended so far into the flash channel it caused ignition problems...DO NOT ACCEPT THIS!

2) Have had to take a bit off the underribs. This is not a big deal, a file or dremmel then a bit of touch up blueing and you're good to go. Takes maybe 10 min.

3) The hammer problem. Some have lined right up, some are so far off that the hammer edge hits the nipple, not acceptable. This is a barrel problem not a gun problem as this particular barrel is off the same amount on ALL the stock assys I've tried it on. For this pariticular 15/16 barrel it was true with TC, lyman, and Charles Daly stocks it should have "dropped in to....." , same amount off on ALL stock assys. At times I wonder if the explaination about the helicoil issue/fix was true or if they just drilled the original holes in the wrong place and elected a quick fix to avoid replacing the breech plugs?

4) Lyman/investarms tangs place the barrel ca. 1/16-1/32 LOWER than a TC tang. Sometimes the inletting will accept this sometimes not. If you file things you will have slop at the tang/breech, not good. So I could still use the original barrels (lyman, Charles Daly), I brought tangs from TOW (ca. $5), silver soldered the bottom of the tangs mortise then remachined the top and bottom of the mortise to place the barrel in the proper position, that is so the top flat is now level with the top flat of the tang: I switch out tangs with barrels.

5) Once you get them working they shoot good!!!

Seems to me that at the prices GM wants for a barrel and given the inter-op problems you describe, you would be better off buying entire new guns in the desired calibers, No?

I got a 15/16 GM barrel in 54 cal for my TC. It dropped right in with no problems. The hammer lined up fine with the nipple. I ordered it from Tip Curtis at the Frontier Shop, he told me he doesn't sell any GM Drop In Barrels with the helicoil insert. I'm still working up a load but I think it's going to shoot good.
You can reach him at [email protected]

I bought a .40x32" for a tc hawken stock, no issues whatsoever. serial was after the helicoil stuff.
I could not be happier.

I have the following GM FLINT barrels:

.40cal rifled RB
.54cal smoothbore
.58cal rifled RB
.62cal smoothbore

Every one had some sort of problem either I had to fix or send back to GM to fix...but...after getting them corrected, I have to say they are outstanding shooters...and I thought the .58cal x 1:70" was the most accurate barrel I'd ever owned until I started shooting the new .40cal...now they're tied for first place.

Frankly, I think a lot of the wedge pin tenon and underrib fit problems I've had with them is due to TC stock variations in dimension tolerances rather than with GM wedge pins or underribs.

A couple dropped in OK but a couple others did not...had to shorten the underribs 1/8".

A couple let the barrel sit low enough that the wedge pin tenon was down too low and blocked the ramrod from sliding in...used a belt sander to remove some metal from the bottom of the tenon so the ramrod would slide past it.

The ramrods that come with them are Knight's black, hollow aluminum rods and the vent liners are just a set screw with a hole in it...I replaced the rods with brass to match the Hawken furniture, and toss the GM liner, replacing it with TC's new style fast liner.

Aggravating, but worth it to me...recommend you order yours through Cain's Outdoors in West VA, or Tip Curtis Frontier Shop in Tenn, specifying you want NO HELICOILs (they understand) and just expect a couple minor fitting excerises when you receive it...because the barrels really do shoot well.

What is a helicoil?
Commonly used in applications where an original threaded hole has been stripped out, the hole can be drilled and tapped to a larger size, then a properly sized 'helicoil' is screwed in, to create a new set of threads, and a new screw is screwed into the helicoil to hold whetever it was holding in the past...sparkplug holes in the head of an auto engine, etc.
But NOBODY thinks it's a good idea to use one in a firearm with it's pressure just a couple inches from your head.

A local tire shop has a sign that says "It takes year's to earn a customer, but only minutes to lose one".

I am sold on Green Mountain Barrels. I have a 50 and a 58 and they are super accurate. I got mine from Track of the Wolf.

Serial numbers between 026220-027303 are being recalled. Send it in and GM Will make it right.

I also got a barrel from GM. It was a drop in for a Cabelas. It didnt fit either. The front sight was loose from the factory, and the rib was too long. I had to file the tang down also. It's in now, and boy does it shoot good. I Like it now. 54 cal. 1-70 twist -- 120 grains 2f, it shoots one big hole off the bench at 30 yds.

I have one in .45 for the T/C and it's a real fine shooter. No helicoil, but I bought it from a vendor who had some older ones in stock. From what I'm reading and hearing now, I won't be buying anymore until all this sorts out, if it does.
