Anybody know where I can find black powder in or around San Diego Calif? So far only Pyrodex. Rather use BP if possible.
Thanks

Go to the Links section up on the top of the Index page to this forum. You will find it under Member Resources. Click on Links. Look for Powder suppliers. Click on Goex. That will take you to the company webpage. The site has a map of the lower 48, and shows the names of Distributors of the powder for all the states. The names, address, phone number( usually 800), and sometimes an Email address will be given. Contact the distributor to find a local retailer near San Diego. Or better yet, just order powder from one of the distributors, or from Graf &Sons, or Powder Inc. where you can order as little 5 lbs of powder and get some kind of discount. If you order 25 lbs( a case), you save more money. If you buy 25 lbs in bulk, you save even more. If you shoot every week, going through 25 lbs in a year or so is really no trouble. Otherwise, find some buddies to split the cost of the shipment, and put in a combined order. There is a $20.00 per shipment Haz Mat fee charged, so the more powder you buy per shipment, the lower that fee is per lb of powder received.Members report recent purchases of case lots of powder for about $12.00 per pound. Bulk price is reported to be a few dollars per lb. less than that. Compare that to what you are paying for pyrodex, or any of the other substitutes. Make sure you actually read How MUCH substitute powder is in the can or bottle. Often, its less than 16 oz., which makes what you are paying for a lb. of the stuff actually much higher than the cost of the botttle or can.

-----don't think the links section is working--can't get on for about a week so far-----

Regarding the El Cajone Gun Exchange... all they carry is Pyrodex. It's the old powder classification deal again.
The Links section is working fine. Found Goex powder broker W.A. Murphy, Inc in El Monte California. I'm going to a San Diego Muzzleloaders Club shoot tomorrow. They may have a club contact as well.
Thanks

You will like the San Diego Muzzleloaders.
I was a member from 1975-1978 when I was stationed out there in the Navy. Great bunch of folks. A lot of the people from the 70s are still club members.

You were right! Great group of guys and gals. Very knowledgeable group. Joined this morning. What a memory blast when you walk up,smell the smoke and hear the reports echoing around the hills behind the range. A member allowed me to shoot his .50 GPR. Hadn't figured on that but didn't say no.
The pro shop on the range carries GOEX so that problem was erased. Learned a lot and had a great time
