spent some time at the range today working up a good deer lado for my 62. fowler. was shooting at 25 yards as that is about the distance i usally shoot sitting in my stand. settled on 85 ff, bear greased patch and a .600 warren round ball. the fowler shoots 3 inches low and 3 inches to the left. using Kentucky widage i can get a three shot group to touch at 25 yards. as long as i don't take running shots i feel very confident i can take deer with this set up.

Easy, don't run and shoot at the same time... :kid:

Very nice looking musket and gear you have there, should bring many deer to the table in the years to come...

the maple stock was t.v.m.'s p++++ grade which is rather costly but i'm glad i did it when i had the money! ya got to see it up close to apperiate it, absolutly beautifull!

This must still be the old days because it's still done that way.

Slow

If you ever want to hit anything on a regular basis, bending the barrel is the way to do it.
Okay, I can see how that might fix the sighting problem, but I too would be worried about trying that... worries about the barrel blowing aside, won't that also mess up the fit of the barrel in the stock?

I have the same gun. Mine is iron mounted, plain wood. I lucked out on the zero. My fowler shoots direct to the 10 ring at 25. I am using .600 ball 60grs of Wano Shuetzen and a .18 pillow tick. It does real good with shot out to 35 or 40 yds.

Mr. Brooks,
I understand this is a common practice and is even done to modern center fire rifles, at the factory. But what happens to the beautiful job you may have accomplished regarding the "inletting" of the barrel to wood fit (especially, long full stock models)? Or is the amount the barrel is actually bent, so miniscule as to be inconsequential regarding same?
Best Wishes

so miniscule as to be inconsequential.
Right, it doesn't take much. Back in the olden days when cars had bumpers that extended away from the body that was
a favorite place for trap shooters to adjust the barrels to where they wanted it to shoot. In some cases the barrel is already bent and your just straightning it. Also in a smoothbore with no rear sight it may be as simple as having your eye in slightly the wrong place.

I agree - it's very purty maple!

I too (like Redwing) have the same gun, iron mounted in plain maple with a reddish stain. I've only used it with shot - hope to try .600 prb soon, though.

Have a great hunting season - let us know WHEN you get your deer with that gun! :winking:

Redwing - (I assume you meant .018 pillow ticking but...) Isn't that an extremely tight fit for a .600 ball in a .62 cal. smoothbore? I only ask becasue I have the same gun as you, and I want to try shooting roundball - I was thinking more like a .010 patch. ::

next time out try about 10-15 grains more powder for giggles and yuks.. if your right handed it could come in..be sure to try a fiber wad under the ball.. sure is an ugly looking dog youve got there.. :kid: dave

Maestro, No its not too tight in my TVM .62. [Yes it should be .018 walmart red&white.] I use a .600 ball and patch wet with Snot. I use a ball starter and push it down 5" and ram it home. It can be a little tight but it shoots very good at 25 and 50 Yds. I have used a .013 patch goes down with less effort, but does not group as well. With the tight patch it shoots to the 10 ring at 25 yds. When I shoot the .013 it tends to hit a little low and left of the 3" bull. I doubt that a .010 would be a good choice but you can check it out. The build up of fouling in the breech end of the Bl. can be a problem. It will cause misfires. They need a little more attention on the fouling side. I really like mine, would like to put one of the woven slings on it. But hate to drill the holes.
