Was just at the local gun shop and saw a used .50 cal. Renegade there for 175. I believe it is an older kit because of the serial number on the barrel -KXX66- There is a little surface rust on the barrel and tang. Double set trigger works well, with a little green corrosion in the hammer. The stock looks great. There is a little unevenness of the fit of the tang and butt plate to the wood almost like it wasn't really sanded down to look pretty, but the barrel locks up real good and tight. And I don't think it has the the bolt through the grip to the trigger for strength. There is no K on the stock to indicate it as a kit though? The bore is nice and shinny. Can see the breech plug when you shine a light down it. Although that wont matter because I am going to get a GM IBS 58 barrel for it. So is this a good deal? If the stock cracks will TC's warranty cover it?

You won't be disapointed for $175, I have a beater myself in a .54 and it works fine.........

if the stock cracks i don't know for sure if T/C will cover it, but stock repair is usually not that hard to do for yourself. remembering mine, the stock doesn't fit as well as it might at the butplate: there's about 1/16 overhang where the wood is proud at the upper edge. if it really starts to irritate me i'd smooth it out, but then i'd have to refinish the stock, and i've got other irons in the fire, and it doesn't bug me all that much, 'cause it's strictly a rifle to go bang, not a rifle to look pretty.

as regards the 'fair market value' of a Renegade- remember that this will be a 'working gun,' you won't take this to the range to impress the guys: you take this to the woods to put holes in things that you want to put holes into, such as Bambi, and this particular rifle will exceed every reasonable expectation in that respect.

to that end you'll get a boatload more than your $175 worth out of the rifle, so by all means, get down to the gun store and plonk down your bucks before somebody else does. i think the price is more than fair.

While that particular rifle doesn't appeal to me, I understand many of our members have one. I would think you should heed advice given and pounce on it, if within your budget; you can't buy much in the line of M/L rifles for that price anymore! A little cleaning and tweaking and you will have a great rifle for your needs.

With regards to the GM .58 barrel, I ordered that same barrel in October '09 from Mid-South and have been on a back order list since then. Sure hope you have better luck getting a barrel from them or else where than I did. Now let me say this, I was able to find a new/used GM .58 barrel from a fellow forum member and it nothing but great!

I did the same thing with a Renegade I picked up for 160 bucks. I dropped a Gm .58 in it and stripped and refinished the stock. No stain just 8 coats of Tru-oil. The gun shoots lights out with hornady .570 .018 patch and 100-110 grains ffg.
The GM .58 drop ins are hard to get right now. .54s are easier to find. If your set on a drop in .58 call the Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium. They carry drop ins from Oregon barrel for TC and Lyman.

As far as Tc fixing a cracked stock. Their warranty department never ceases to amaze me. A friend just last year sent in a 25 year old Hawken with a cracked stock and they replaced it.
now that they have been bought out i hope this continues.

So I bit the bullet (or roundball per say :haha: ) and went back to the store and the Renegade was still there, and they said I could put it on layaway! So no denying fate. She's now in their layaway storage waiting for her new and very excited owner to get the cash to set her free.
