I have an o/u Beretta, and I am thinking about using it to thin some of the jacks that we have around here. As light as it is, I prefer something with a max of about 70 grains of FFg behind it. What size shot would you recommend? I'm used to using a rifle on these long eared crop thinners, and don't have a clue when it comes to shot.

I have a Navy arms double barrel .12 ga that weighs less tha 7 lbs. I use 90 grs of Pyrodex RS, a Win. AA plasric shotcup with 1 1/4oz of #5 lead shot, then a thin overshot card for jackrabbits. I have taken quite few of them with that load, and recoil is not an issue. I will sometimes fire 12-15 shots a day with that load with no problem. I use the same load except with an overpowder wad then a heavy plastic steel shotcup and #1 steel shot for ducks and geese.

In the Lyman's great big book of everything it list 75 grains as the lightest load, so I will quote from there...

1 ounce load:

2 3/4 drams FFg (75 grains)
1 heavy over-powder card
1/2 inch fiber wad
1 ounce #5 or #6 shot
1 over-shot card

Note: If you only shoot one barrel and decide to reload the empty tube, un-prime the other barrel first...
