After a long curiosity, I finally bought my first muzzleloader last spring (a .50 caliber GPR). At the time, none of my buddies hunted or shot with bp. I have managed to get my best friend (signed up to the site as "Fabucci") interested in the sport after I'd been shooting my GPR for awhile, but he is as big a greenhorn as I am.

I wish I had found this site sooner as I've learned more in a couple weeks than I did in the 9 or 10 months prior to that. Unfortunately, this site has also fueled my addiction, and I'm now interested in a flinty and perhaps building a rifle.

Anyway, getting to the point, are there any books or other references any of you would recommend as must haves for a greenhorn?

Hello, get the Complete Blackpowder Handbook by Sam Fadala. I think there are 5 editions but anyone of them is fine.

Very addictive hobby, but very satisfiying. Welcome to the site.

The Gunsmith Of Greenville County by Peter Alexander, very good book if your going to build one.

In addition to this great forum; have to agree with Pa Hunter on Sam Fadala's books. Lots of good information from a variety of sources will make you a very educated and safe b.p. shooter.

Sam has a Ph.D in English and you can learn a lot with Sam's easy to enjoy style of writing.

If you do not want to buy a book, local libraries often have one or more of Sam's books or will get them for you on inter-library loan.

Got to agree with Brett Sr. this forum is better than any book. Books are great but when you need something explained a little better or in more detail these guys will help you out. Been black powder shooting little over a year now and these guys have been great. Welcome to the forum

I have the Lyman Black Powder Handbook & Loading Manual by Sam Fadala and relied heavily on it while teaching myself to shoot my muzzleloader. Would his other book also be worth picking up or is a lot of the information repeated? Thanks.

I'm with the folks saying the forum is better than any book. You'd need a library full to cover the information you can find here. Welcome to the board and to a very rewarding and addictive sport!
