I bought a second shooting bag from a forum member to use with my rifles since my original is full of shotgun wads, shot, and assorted other smoothbore stuff.

It is a bag marketed by October Country and it is like new. It also came with some freebies that the seller included.
I am very pleased with it .. and the price.

I got one in 78 had to replace the stap and flap thier stuff is well worth the price. Cost about 40 then so a dollar a year was a good deal

Nice! I have two October Country bags, one just like yours that I purchased online from October Country and a used but in good condition beaver tail style bag by them I happened upon in an antique store while on vacation passing through Illinois.

I really like their products. I bought my powder horn and range rod from them as well.

I've got the exact same bag, very nicely made however I personally find it a tad bit on the small side. I also have since sewn a piece of antler to the bags body so it could be closed with a leather thong. Hopefully you enjoy it!

I just purchased the same October Country bag from forum member Htredneck in the classifieds.
Mine has a closure on it, and I'm totally satisfied with it in every way.
Interestingly though, to your comment regarding size..when I first opened the box and examined the bag...My first impression was that it's too LARGE for my modest needs. :shake:
I've gotten over that however...I believe it will be just right.
I've thought about dressing it up some, but haven't done anything yet.
I'm putting together an outfit to be consistent with my 40 caliber iron mounted Southern Mountain Rifle. I'm not sure such a persona would be doing much with "bling"..just keeping it plain and functional.

This was second-hand and in like-new shape. However, I paid less than you did in '78.

I have a real great bag from Grey Bear Leather that is larger but have it stuffed with all my shotgun wads, cards, etc. for hunting small game.

I always fill a bag to its capacity whether I need to or not so the October Country bag will be used for my .45 flinter and should be ideal.

I got one like that. Mine came with extra pieces of leather, that I made into "hammer stalls", for my friends. I rubbed it down with several coat of leather cream, made for HD saddle bags. Made it feel a little softer, and made it somewhat water resistant.

Can you be a little more specific on the "leather cream" product you mention..??
I've been wondering what to use on the October Country bag I recently acquired.
Thanks. :hatsoff:

There may be differences between bags then? :idunno: I certainly do not carry anything more than is needed, more stuff = more trouble IMO. Mine was purchased from TOW but is marked October Country on the back... Again, maybe differences in the two :idunno: The main dislike I have is the interior portion of the bag, doesn't allow enough room to comfortably move my hand when looking for accouterments. When I pack the basics, the bag looks as if it's going to burst...

The leather dressing, was some that I had for my Harley-Davidson leather bags. It's called leather dressing, and says to help repel water. Sold at HD dealer. I'm sure there are similar products. It looks like petroleum jelly, just darker and thicker. I put it on and brushed it with a shoe shin brush, and polished with a soft cloth. It doesn't make it shin, but a little softer and a shade darker. I did not detect any smell, and hopefully will help it turn water.

I guess I'm not making myself clear. I'm not one who overloads on gear. Light, fast and efficient is my moto. My particular bag, like the one shown apparently is of a different size, simple as that.

I use Fiebing's mink oil paste or Neatsfoot oil for leather. Either will make the leather darker in color.

I'm pretty sure the Fiebing's mink oil contains silicone so don't use it for a patch lubricant.

Zackery the same as mine. I cut a slit in the flap with a small round hole punched at either end to stop it from running.

Then I made a really cool button out of a piece of antler by drilling into the side of the antler with a hole saw minus the drill bit. Then a fine drill to make two thread holes in the middle. Sewed it onto the main bag pocket with sinew. Looks and works brilliantly!

How about posting a photo of it. Sounds great. I'd like to see how you did it. I do better with visuals than with written descriptions.
