I got a thompson center renegade today for my first gun.
Can anyone tell me what other things I will need to get
started. Also this gun has a see thru scope mount on it
that has a rear site attached to scope mount I wold
like to replace this with regular adjustable back site
where would I find this.Any advice will be appreciated
as I have no friends who are into black powder shooting

B.O.B.S.( Brotherhood Of Blackpowder Shooters) :applause: You shouldn't have a problem getting a replacement rear sight direct from T/C. You will also need, powder, patches(either pre-cut or cut your own) if it is to be cut your own, you will need some pillow ticking or #40 drill cloth
(both available at JoAnns fabrics). For a patch lube you can find all kinds of recipes here on the board, i use plain 'ol Crisco. You will need a powder horn or flask to carry the powder in and a powder measurer to pour the powder into before pouring it down the barrel. NEVER pour powder directly into the barrel from a horn or flask. You will need appropriate sized round balls (ie .490 or .495 for a .50 cal.) You will need percussion caps. I would suggest with the T/C that you use CCI #11 Magnum caps. You will probably need a short starter to start the ball and patch down the barrel. I would suggest you get a nipple wrench to remove the nipple when cleaning, and a patch puller worm to remove any patches that get stuck in the barrel while cleaning. A jag of proper cal. and a bore brush of the proper caliber to use for cleaning..A possibles bag of some sort to carry the stuff in also. There will be more stuff you will wind up getting if you stay with the sport, but this should get you started.

Trad, if you're just starting into muzzleloading, I think it would be an excellent investment to buy a good introduction to muzzleloading book...look in the sporting goods sections of Kmart, Walmart, major sporting goods stores, gun shops, etc...or, look at major suppliers like Cabelas, etc...get a good one (or two) and read it cover to cover...and you'll probably find that you'll go back to it from time to time;
Also, there's a good set of 'links' at the top of this forum that have good articles to help get started...enjoy!!

Tradhunter,

Here's a link with info on starting out wip muzzleloading.

Be sure to check the Links under the "The Forum" on this site. Lots of good stuff under Techniques and Proceedures.

Here are the contacts for T/C. Be sure to ask for a manual (free) if you didn't get one with the Renegade. They may send you a rear sight if you're polite and ask nice.

If a call or letter to Thompson Center doesn't find you a rear sight I think I have one from a T/C Contender that MIGHT fit I think it's the same sight on both. PM me and I'll send it to you. Anything to get a scope off a muzzleloader. But please try T/C first. I may need it if I take the scope off one of my Contender barrels.

What Rebel stated is the basics, once you get going deeper into muzzleloading you may feel the need to make your own things...

Wonderful things like deer antler tip powder measures, leather percussion cap holders, patch knife and such...

If you intend to shoot T/C maxiballs or equivalent, you will not need the patches, but the maxiball will need lubed, they would look like this when done...

Your Contender sight will have a base for a round barrel and the Renegage base has a flat bottom to fit the octagon
barrel.

Don't let anybody fool you about the renegade.....It is a good gun......just the right weight to carry hunting in the woods...has a real good balance......about the sight.....check e-bay, I believe it is the same as the T/C Hawkens......Best of Luck.......john.......

I agree, my first muzzleloader was a T/C Renagade .54 caliber flintlock...

It was a strong gun capable of killing anything in North America...

I gave it to someone wanting to start muzzleloading once I got my brown bess, that was back in 1985 and he still has it...
