I've been working up a load for my new 54cal GPR barrel. I've settled on 75gr 2F Goex under a .535 ball patched with .018" pillow ticking.CCI standard #11 primers light the whole thing off.
It's touching holes at 80yards. I went to my usual place in the woods and there were people there already so I went to an alternate and set up. Fired one shot and a sound I haven't heard in over 48years sent the hair on the back of my neck standing up. I was getting incoming fire!!!!! A couple people over a quarter mile away were shooting at me!!!They were on a landing in the clearcut and shooting right at me, needless to say I got the hell out of dodge.A muzzleloader at that distance has no edge against c/f rifles. I went back to the other spot and the guys there were getting ready to leave so I decided to stay there. I told them about what had happened and they told me that there had been quite a bit of that going on and one guy had been killed a few months ago. I'll be bringing a fast shooting C/F next time I go out. Anyhow I got it zeroed at 80 and it shoots great!!!!! It cleans so easy its hard to believe. Never again will I be using anything but real black powder. FRJ

Perhaps finding a local gun range and/or finding a safe place for shooting practice would be better than attempting, or even thinking about retalitory shooting would be a good idea.

It's called self defense not retaliation. I'm not going to change what I do just because of some irresponsible punks. FRJ

Sounds like what you should be bringing instead of a fast shooting centerfire is the long arm of the law.

This sort of manure should be reported to the police as soon as possible.

The law should be very interested in rounding up idiots like that and it's better that you tell them about it rather than getting yourself in over your head trying to teach these punks a lesson.

Anyway, glad to hear your having fun shooting your muzzleloader.

If you ever have an inkling to, my GPR .54 shoots 385gr REAL bullets really well! Glad you're enjoying yours, they are great rifles! Sorry to hear about the idiots in your neck of the woods.

You do as you see fit but you can't take a gun out expecting to use it and than claim self defense! That is exactly what the guy in Florida is in hot water for. In other words you can't put yourself into harms way and stand your ground. Take Zonie's advise.

I don't know where you guys are getting your info and quite frankly I don't give a damn. I can defend myself against ANY gunfire aimed in my direction and I dont have to hide or run from anyone or anything. Maybe in your cowardly minds its a good thing to run like a little girl but in my United States we don't give up to punks that are shooting at us. Leave me alone I dont like cowards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, you do have a right to defend yourself, but please consider all options before making a final decision. I agree with you that we should not run or hide, and should instead deal with it if we have the training and equipment to do so, especially since it sounds like LE may not be able to get there in time to deal with it in your situation. Been there, done that, and in my case it was drug runners shooting North at me and across our border, so same idea, but different legalities involved. I wont say what the results were but obviously, I'm here to talk about it.

Having said that, I can tell you that lawyers are expensive, but so are medical bills and funeral costs, and I would personally much rather pay a lawyer than a mortician. I always have something more appropriate for modern defensive needs than my ML anytime I'm hunting or even just out at the range, and practice with my handguns enough to be effective out to at least 200 yds. And then I have a long gun available in case things get really interesting, which it sounds like you have some experience with so should be able to handle if needed. I am NOT saying to back off and let them run you off, but I would ask that you take a bit of time to cool off and consider ALL possible consequences before deciding on a course of action. It sounds like you have the life experience to make the right decision, and will not disagree with your decision regardless of what it is, but do ask that you take the time to think before you put yourself on the line again, and then go ahead with the CORRECT course of action as you believe it to be. I didnt go looking for mine back then, but it found me anyway, and was dealt with appropriately. And, yes, I did go back and continue using that area as my shooting range, but we always made sure it was at least two of us after that to make sure we at least had a chance if it ever happened again. Whatever you decide, best of luck, and above all, stay safe.
