I have a question to ask ... up til now I have made do with what I have around the shop .. but I would like to supplement my tool inventory. So ...

What wood gouges do you own, and do you use the most ... or would like to have, when working with stocks? I am looking for only a few preferred tools that will be used.

Sizes and shapes, how many? .. numbers please.

I am NOT talking about flat chisels here, I already have these, and also NOT turning tools either ... but rather longer carver gouges use to hog out and shape wood by manual hand work. (I have some short minis already)

Thanx amigos ...

This shot can explain better than I can. I know...it's a mess... I have a set of antique English gouges that form a volute, a shallow 1" for stocking and cheek pieces, and a #3 or #4 3/8" that I use a daylights out of, as well as a 1/4" in the same sweep.

So are you saying that you use a 1", 3/8", 1/4" the most? What length shaft and handle?

I've looked at gouges too, and I'm a bit confused. What is sweep??? Is it the amount of curvature in the radius??? And what are good sweeps for carving gouges?I've just been picking up what I think I'll need. .........George F.
