Greetings all new member here. I ordered a kit from Lyman last Dec. and it finaly arrived two weeks ago. Really nice piece of wood. I'm new to this and I have a concern with the breech hook to tang fit as it came from the factory. It seems much to loose and the Lyman service rep seemed to think it would be ok. I don't. I have a light duty wire feed welder and was thinking of welding tacks across the hook and refitting it, have any of you had this problem and is the welding a good idea.

I'd put some "faith" in what the Lyman service rep. had to say!! :imo: :m2c:

Old Salt your right I was obviously vague in my discription of the fit. The tang slips on loosely and there is side play and it can be twisted. The service rep from Lyman sounded suspicious like he thought I might have been too aggresive with the file. In retrospect I can see his point. ---------------------------------------------- The problems of the world can't be solved over white wine that can only be done with sour mash

IMO, if the side flats of the barrel fit into the unfinished stocks barrel channel with about 1 or 2 thicknesses of paper clearance you will not have any problem.
When you apply the oil to the stock wood, it will swill slightly and reduce the side clearance to almost nothing. When this happens, the barrel channel will hold and align the barrel just fine.

The hooked breach tang just holds the back of the barrel down into the stock and takes the recoil. It doesn't have to "locate" the back of the barrel from side to side. :)
