Building supply place was out of stucco so I had no choice but to go out shooting today :: Usually, there are only one or two good ol' boys at the range on a weekday, shooting some sort of modern semi-auto pistol or maybe gettin' their deer rifles scoped in, but never any black powder burners. Today was different! There were only three people on the range and we were all making smoke! One fella was shooting an 1850ish (original) target rifle that was only a little older than he was. It had been freshed out to .45 at some point in its history. Big heavy barrel - thing must have weighed 12 lbs.

The other guy was using a Sharps to ring metal targets at 150 yards shooting offhand. Then he switched to paper targets and was getting 2" groups. Tough company to keep.

All the targets had been freshly redone - nice crisp cardboard resulting in nice clean holes.

Little bit of overcast following a light rain - nice temp and tolerable humidity.

Upped my .40's load from the usual 25 to 30 grains and really liked the results. POI just a tad higher than the aiming point at 50 yards, but not so much higher that it kept me from mailing the card to General Claude

Must have fired about 40 rounds today, all on one flint and with only two pan flashes (nearly empty primer was not dispensing enough), and with no swabbing of the bore. Good shooting up to about 75 yards, but a bit problematic beyond that. Tried shooting an 18" metal target hanging at 150 yards. Aimed about a foot above the target and watched the ball hit the dirt about 4' short :shocking: Finally quit trying when I ran out of balls (the lead kind, thankyou).

Anybody got a recommended max load for 3f in a .40 cal with a 7/8" barrel?

good for you, thats the kind of day that keeps a man alive!

ahhh the smell of smoke in the mourning ....gonna be out there tommorrow to git a less then 60mm shot on the card to mail it in to general musketman ::............bob

He was shooting 2" groups offhand at 150yds ?????

Those are enjoyable range sessions...shooting events and not cleaning/wiping events!

Nope! Sorry for the confusion - he switched to elbows on the bench when he switched to paper targets.

Just rechecked the width and it is actually 3/4", with a length of 42". What do you guys figure a max charge in that thing might be?

I am presently working up the proper everything for a beautiful little .40cal early Reading rifle that I had David Dodds make for me. I'm not there yet on the proper combination of everything, but I'm almost sure that it will end up with 30gr 3f GOEX. I would have thought higher, but David told me that 30gr would be the magic number, and he's correct it looks like!

Every rifle is different, of course, but this .40 seems to like .395 ball with .010 patch, and 30 grains seems real sweet.

But I was impressed with the tremendous drop at 150 yards. Probably shouldn't have been, mind you, but I was surprised to see the ball hitting at least 3 and maybe 5 feet below the point of aim. I'm wondering just how hot a charge I can safely put in her to lengthen out the flat part of the ballistics curve.

I went up to 60 grs in my ,32 Crockett, but best accuracy was with 30-35 grs. With 40 gr i killed a coyote with it at around 150 yds. with an shot in the ear. Lot of luck involved. Wouldn't try that kind of shot on game, but i don't like coyotes.

I don't have any data for a .395 ball over 30 grains of powder but it would be a little lower velocity than a .350 ball over 30 grains of FFFg in a .36 caliber gun.

The .36 caliber gun with 30 grains of FFFg has a velocity around 1684. If I drop that velocity down to 1500 FPS and run the Roundball Ballistics program for a .395 ball it says a gun sighted in at 50 yards will have a bullet drop of 30 inches at 140 yards and 44 at 160 yards.
Looks like your guess of 36 inches is pretty close! :)

Even if you could crank the velocity up to 2200 FPS, the drop at 140 yards would be 16.9 inches at 140 yards. :(

Thanks, Zonie; that helps. Kinda tough to aim small when you're holding so high the target is covered by the barrel ::
