An older gentleman in our black powder club put together a Great Plains Rifle Flintlock kit. He did a nice job of it and browned the hardware and barrel. However he found the gun too front heavy and hard to hold steady on target. He had our local Gun Smith cut the barrel back to 26 inches, install the original blade sight, and shorten the ram rod. Now he can hit just about anything he aims at. This Saturday i had the chance to try it out at the range.I was quite amazed. The gun has good balance and shoulders and points well!! I aimed at a 10 inch disk at 60 yards, and hit it with the first shot. I was also impressed with the fast lock time. He also has a good piece of barrel left over which could be used to make a dandy pistol.

I have a couple of carbines and I like them for short range work. Mine are 21 and 24 inches. It's all about the balance of a rifle on how well it points. My favorite 50 cal. is 28" and it is balanced very well.
