I went out shooting my Great Plains pistol today and I decided to bring my chronograph. I was shooting patch and .530 round balls also T/C Maxi-hunter in 360 gr. The velocity with round ball averaged 1050 fps/575(ft/lbs) and with the Maxi-hunter it was 940 fps/706(ft/lbs). The accuracy of both of these was virtually identical but the Maxi-balls group did strike higher on the target. I used 50 gr. of Pyrodex P. for both loads.

I had posted a different thread on using Lee R. E. A. L. Bullets in a G. P. R. my reasoning was if the R. E. A. L.

If you are going to pack this pistol with you, "loaded", I would say that that is the best reason for not using a conical as it can work forward of the charge and that could cause some bad times if you had to fire it and did not check to see that the conical was fully seated... You don't have that problem with a patched round ball... I feel the same goes for any muzzle loading firearm that is loaded with a conical... It's purely a matter of choice what a shooter perfers to use... I don't think the added foot pounds of a conical outways the safety feature of the patched round ball.. :)

I'm supprised that your ball doesn't strip with 50 grains of Pyro P. I use thirty grains of 3f in my 54 and have great accuracy - though I don't know the speed.

When I'm target shooting I usually use my powder flask I set up for my Ruger old army it's only 25 gr. Just to make the chronograph numbers look good I put the maximum, the manual says its
