59* at the crack of dawn, strong red sun behind mist and fog...saw a half dozen does and a flock of turkeys enroute...got to the range and was shooting by 7:00am.

Put another 50 'Cheapshot' .490 cast balls through the flinter...no dry balls or anything, had one ker-latch at the 30-40 shot mark cause I was too lazy to stop and take care of the flint & lock ahead of time...a great morning to be alive.

Having a wild thought about taking a caplock on Monday morning for a change... :hmm:

An old saying from along the shore here.
Sounds like you had a heck of a morning and your right it was a great morning to be alive.
Still to many Black flies here to enjoy shooting.Should slack off in a couple of weeks.

Nothing like those god-awful things you have...worst thing I'm aware of are ticks during spring & summer months...every now and then a mosquito or two...

The othere night after supper I picked up my good friend Soggy and we headed out to the range. We did get out of my Jeep and take our longrifles out of the cases.I think Soggy snapped a cap and I never even got a cleaning patch downbore and we had to leave.
Not much fun when your swollen and bleeding behind the ears from bug bites.

Are there any sorts of remedies other than mosquito netting head gear...are there any sprays or smoke bombs, chemicals, etc, that repels them?

Deet is one of the only things that works comfortably but I hate to put something on my skin that will melt plastic.Bug nets work but they are hotter than Heck.If I am trouting I will just "tough it out".
Here is a pic of a range trip from last year..
P.s you can actually see the flies in the photo...

Are 'deer flies' the same as or different but similar to the 'black flies' way up north?

As I recall the blackflies are smaller, more like a mean midge...deerflys are like a housefly but they bite.We also get the larger horseflys too.

Nope, deer flies are about the size of house flies, while black flies are little teeny critters. Both bite like crazy and have the mentality of terrorists. The farther north you go, the meaner the flying bugs get. I believe the mosquito is the Canadian national bird. However, we have no scorpions or Gila monsters and practically no poisonous snakes. Good trade off, I'd say. graybeard

Actually the mosquito is the Alaskan state bird.

They are the only thing that give the eagles competition in the food chain.
