I have had one on order through Midway since 12/08. Midway has now moved the posted date for shipping to 10/30/09. Big deal.

This is getting old so I called Green Mountain and asked where the 58s were in the production schedule. The young lady who answered the call put me on hold and went to ask someone who would probably know. The answer is sometime in the spring of 2010, maybe.

They only have 33 on order and they are slowly moving through the shop. She said they have orders for thousands of 10/22 barrels so the 58s get put off.

Maybe next deer season.

I bet the label stamped into their barrel is Tooth Fairy.

You probably know this, but someone here on the site went directly to TC custom shop. Had one made up and delivered in a couple of weeks, though they had forecast it would take longer. I don't recall the price, but if memory serves, it sounded comparable to GM. Better do it quick though, before TC falls in love with the 10/22! :rotf:

Ya, but 1-48,, :shocked2: , that's wanting a .58 bad,,
I'm happy with my .54's,,I've noticed several suppliers are out of those too,,,

I don't know about the "bad" part. I've got a couple of 58's with 1:48" twist and one with a 1:70" or 1:72". I'm not a great rifleman, but even with sandbags helping, I don't see any difference between them with PRBs.

I do see a big difference when that 58 caliber ball strikes home compared to smaller balls. Makes 'em seem really small. I'd say get the barrel and ignore the twist. Differences are pure theory, not borne out by fact in side by side shooting.

If you have to have a GM barrel by all means wait patiently. . . . . . but don't hold your breath :surrender:

Maybe you should at least talk to Fox Ridge Outfitters, TCs custom shop, and see what they have/can make for your rifle. They were very helpful to me.

I bought a 58 cal barrel for my Renegade from them this spring $190 to my door. I had it in a month, took a while because they had to make it. . . . . I'd still be waiting for a GM. . . finished barrel or blank no matter. I am not that patient of a person :cursing:

I am pleased with my new Renegade barrel, it is well made, and very accurate with a PRB load. I will be carrying it a lot this fall.

Good luck with your quest!

I was the one who ordered that barrel. It was about $190 delivered, and they got it to me in 2 weeks. It also does not have the QLA. As others have said, you'll be waiting a long time if you hold out for a GM barrel.

Let me recommend a barrel maker to you that may be able to help you a lot quicker. Give the folks at Long Hammock a call. Their number is 352-748-7373. If you are lucky you may get to speak to Riley Smith, one of the owners. He can tell you if he has a barrel for you or if he can make one within a reasonable time. Long Hamock barrels are premium barrels that are supremely accurate. I have several rifles using Long Hamock barrels and they are all dandy shooters.

I decided a 1:48 twist would not be too bad based on postings above. Sooo...I called Fox Ridge and the young lady there said a 58 for my Renegade without QLA would cost $175 and only take 4 to 5 months since the no-QLA was a special order.

I declined for now. Got to rethink the QLA.
Any experience would be appreciated.

This past winter I conned the barrels on most of my guns for the purpose of ease of loading, also this winter I purchased a TC Big Boar that had a QLA barrel which saved me the trouble of conning it. If it were me and it meant getting the barrel "now" there would not be one bit of hesitation on my part, and for the price you've been quoted I don't think you could go wrong IMHO.

I'm not impressed with the QLA system. When I was buying a 45 cal TC Hawken I had the choice of QLA or non QLA. I PMed one of our more respected members here for a quick reply. That plus what I've seen with post here in the past, caused me to go with the non QLA. This week I had the chance to shoot a modern TC rifle with the QLA. Lets just say I do not like the QLA one bit. I'm sure glad of the 6 ML I have, none have the QLA and 5 of them are TC rifles. I'd rather spend the xtra time looking for a rifle with out it than to accept one with it.

Ah Brownbear you are so right about .58s
When somthing is hit with a .58 be it a target or a critter, it is hit hard.
Heck with one of my .58s I can see hits on a paper target at 50 yards.

QLA is found on T/C muzzleloaders. The last inch or so of the barrel is unrifled to facilitate easier, more even loading of conicals - not really an issue with PRBs.

My 54 New Englander has the QLA. The cylindrical lead into the rifling is 0.555" diameter and 0.7" deep with a fairly shallow taper from groove to bore diameter. Strange set up. I'm currently inprocess of finding out what it likes besides rubber hammers, so can't comment on how well the idea works. Don't have it broke in and haven't even adjusted the sights yet. But the windage is on.
Can't help but wonder if it was slicked up would the QLA allow successful loading with paper patched. But then I'd probably be wishing I had cross sticks and a foot more barrel.
With that much slop built into the muzzle it might be a little different trimming the patch on roundball.

I don't like the QLA but mine had them when I bought them and back then I didn't know any better. I can't say it matters much but then I never had one that didn't have it.
