Green Mountain Barrel Blank?

Sometime ago I purchased through auction several muzzleloaders. One in particular was someone’s really poor attempt to build a one-off. On the upside, the lands & grooves are spotless, but more importantly the touchhole was never drilled. So I’m thinking this would make for a good starter piece. At 42” I’m just wondering what this barrel would be best suited to become?

I used a 42" barrel building my Early Lancaster.
42 seems to be a very common length.

Front sight is backwards and rear is too far aft. You can build several different styles around that barrel. Do some research. ALR Museum is a good place to start.

GM sold some excess barrels off a few years back, some to Numrich and some to Pecatonica. I purchased one from Pecatonica set up as a T/C replacement barrel. The 42 inch lenght and the line through the Green Mountain symbol makes me wonder if it came from Numrich. Damn near bought one as a blank, wish I would have bought a few. Congratulations on your purchase!

I have used Green Mountain barrels on two of my Pennsylvania long rifles. IMHO, they are good barrels. I even have some GM barrels on some unmentionable firearms.
Bottom line.....GM barrels work.

Big into center fires. Ordered up a couple of 20 caliber Green Mountain barrel blanks. Got them in less than a week. Liked them so much that I ordered up a couple more. Same shipping results. Got them in nothing flat!! Been a while back but I found a Green Mountain drop in barrel in .32 caliber for a CVA project.
Sights, spindles all in black. Original CVA was fired but, put aside WITHOUT cleaning. Barrel was JUNK!! Learned a bit on that project doing the electrolysis thang. Liked the idea of a smaller caliber so the
.32 was a hit. Havn't see another drop in Green Mountain unit for sale listed anywhere.
Only problem with the Green Mountain talk, the more talk, the word gets out and wait time gets longer & availability could suffer. Be careful what you talk about.
My Green Mountain centerfire barrel blanks? Not much taken off the outside. Just enough to get a smooth surface with a polish. Threaded and chambered to my specs and all shoot a 5 shot group @ 100 yards, from the bench that can be covered with a dime. Can't ask for much more than that.
