Anyone shooting one of these in a .50 with the 1-28" twist? Looking at one of these and wondering if they shoot conicals well or are they only good for the unmentionable projectiles? This is a 15/16" for a Hawken stock. I do cast and if you have a good bullet that shoots well can you share that as well.

I have 3 of those barrels and they all absolutely love the Hornady Great Plains bullets in the 385 or 410 grain size. Mine shoot ball very well when using the Hornady ball patch that looks like a sabot for a round ball.

They didn't shoot Powerbelts or Hornady PA conicals very well though.

They also are outstanding with some things the rules don't permit us to write about. I think it's ok if they were discussed in a PM (personal message) so PM me if your curious.

My only GM fast twist is a .50 caliber shorty carbine. I shoot it well enough for close range and use a Lyman 445599 minie mold that has been reworked to make a straight sided paper patched with a stingy hollow base to tuck the paper into. However, a fella with the handle of Idaho Ron has posted in the past very nice longer range results with the Lee .50 cal flat pointed pistol bullet, paper patched and then sized to fit his GM barrel.

I do have several fast twist barrels in 45 and 50. Like was already said if you search for my posts you will see a lot about them. The Hornady bullets are good but the Lee 500 S&W paper patched and sized to fit shoot amazing. Ron

I also have one and it appears to be very good with the those bullets we can't talk about here. I fell into a very large supply of those bullets for free from a sales rep. Have only taken that barrel out to the range once since I got it. However the groups I got that time showed great promise.

By the way, I ended up going the .45 route to take advantage of the multitude of available rifle bullet molds, so had the barrel on a TC New Englander lined to .458" bore diameter. It shoots .451 round ball, paper patched .451-.454 molds and as cast .457-.458 rifle molds. So far I haven't gotten around to sizing down the rifle molds to paper patch them but no doubt it will work and prevent leading with heavier charges.

I have a GM 1/28 barrel for my 50 cal TC Penn Hunter Carbine. Only tried PRB and TC maxi ball at short range. Both ok with light loads. Has anyone used TC maxi hunter in 1/28 short barrel ?

What powder charge are you pushing the Great Plains bullet with? I've got one of these barrels fitted to a Deer Stalker Stock and I'm starting to work a load. Thanks

Well that seems new! Last time I check TOTW they only listed the fast twist IBS barrel. Maybe they are starting to catch up?

I have 24" and 28" long barrels with 1/28 twist. The 24" gets 70 grains of Goex 2f and the longer and a bit heavier barrel gets 90 grains when shooting the Hornady Great Plains bullets.

I shoot 80 grains Goex 3f in the short barrel with Hornady patch for ball and the 250 grain xtp; the longer barrel is set up for 100 grain of Goex 3f and the 300 grain xtp.

I have been slowly changing over to Swiss powder which is a bit hotter shooting but have not worked on these barrels yet with it. They shoot great just the way they are set up now and don't see any need to change it yet as I still have a good deal of Goex left.

I have a Lyman Deerstalker .54 that will get the majority of the range time working up a Swiss load for if I ever get a chance this fall.

As far as I know they are not made any longer and never will be either. Last I talked to them was last fall.

I keep threatenin' to get the 38" long .40 cal Renegade drop-in barrel rebored... maybe some day.

I think if you look around long and hard enough you would probably be able to scare up a percussion drop-in in 1/28 twist. Blanks and assembled flinters would be tough to do. They are good shooting barrels but there were not many flinters made.

385 gr buffalo bullet over a lubed wonder wad and 70-90 grains FFg will all go in a ragged hole at 50 yds

I've been wanting one also, but nobody has one in stock. I did find a GM 32" barrel for PRB's, but I have to buy the whole rifle to get it.

Yeah, Cains was showing them in stock, but when I went to order, it came up as out of stock.

I just had a Oregon Barrel Company 1-66" .54 come in and it will be back from the blue tank on Wed. If it shoots good, I may have them build a 1-32 .50 for a spare Renegade stock I have setting around.

I have a GM PRB .50 barrel and it shoots great.

Hawk Driver, My experience was the same as Walks with Fire. Loads of 80 to 90 grains with Hornady 410 grain conicals shot well. Had a bear last year at 18 yards broadside on a water hole and it never took a step. Fine barrel.

Bought a closeout fast twist stainless 45 barrel from them over the winter for $135. Good deal there and have not had time to shoot it yet. Thinking it may do quite well for longer shots on the plains for deer.
