Green Mountain drop-in barrel recall. Green Mountain needs to do a precautionary recall on some of their Thompson Center drop-in barrels. If you have a barrel in the following serial number range, 026220-027303, please contact Kerry at, 603-447-1095 EXT 18 to make arrangements to have your barrel returned for inspection. See the complete notice at, http://www.gmriflebarrel.com

That's a total of 1,083 barrels to be inspected! :shocking:

Actually that recall notice is already over a year old...odd they don't date it.

FWIW, GM switched to a different drilling & tapping operation and tools, which left the threads in nipple seats and vent liner seats to short and rounded off...my .58cal Flint barrel was in that range.

They sent me a prepaid UPS label, installed a new breech plug, reblued the barrel again to match everything, sent it back to me (no charge of course).

My barrel was less than a year old and I actually appreciated getting it reblued because the original factory bluing was very thin...pan flash was already burning off the bluing on the side of the breech plug with 100 balls through it.

This GM .58cal barrel is so incredibly accurate that I made a big point asking them to be sure NOT to wholeseale replace the barrel assembly, just the breech plug...

Thanks RB,

I have two barrels in that range and just heard about it today :eek:

Sorry about that...it was actually kicked around here on this Forum some last year when I went through it...had taken a couple deer with it, but had to stop using it part way through the season due to hearing about the problem...

I asked TOTW ( where I bought mine ) about it and here is their reply:

ALL of our Green Mountain Barrels have been inspected for stripped nipple threads. Any shooter would probably notice the lack of threads under the nipple. We doubt that more than one or two bad nipple threads were missed by the factory. To check yours, remove the nipple with a standard nipple wrench. If the hole is threaded, its okay.

( mine are OK :: )

Not even close to what GM themselves described to me...said to the naked eye the threads would look normal but in reality they're slightly shorter and more rounded off than they should be. (all of my threads looked normal to me)

IMO...if a responsible company posts a recall about a potentially dangerous situation and offers a free inspection/repair as the responsible (knowledgeable) owners/builders of said product, it's a no brainer for me...it's going back to the official source.

While TOW is a good company by all accounts, in this case as far as I'm concernbed they're just an intermediary vendor giving their opinion and translation of what 'they' think or understand the problem is.

The way I see it is that we're not talking about a bottle of finger nail polish...we're talking about a nipple or a vent that could potentially blow out and hurt, blind (kill?) someone.

So during the lawsuit trial, the victim's spouse's attorney askes me if I knew about the GM recall?
I say: "Yes"

Did I contact GM for free return, inspection & repair?
I say: "No"

They ask why?
I say: "Well, a company I heard about on the Internet who sells these barrels for profit, told a guy who told a guy who told me there's nothing to worry about"...and I'm sorry your husband is dead cause my vent blew out into his temple at 1500 feet per second"

The judge says:
Stop by the cashier's window on your way out.

::

So I may be too conservative, but IMO, if GM says theres a possible problem with a S/N of a product they engineered and sold, I'll leave the responsibility with GM to assure me it's OK or to fix it...then I'll sleep better at night.
:results:

Sure glad that I am not the isurance carrier for Track's liability policy!

Sound like pretty poor advice to me.

I would go with the advice from the barrel manufacturer. They must have good reason for spending all the money that inspection, replacement and shipping cost.

Well this is an interesting thing I have only been back on the board for around 8 months and havent seen last years point of the recall,I'm wondering how tow was able to do a visual inspection, when it was packegded in plastic and the breech end was coverd up??, guess I'm calling green mountain today before I head to work. bb75

I just bought a barrel new in the box and it shot great it would figure it was right in this range guess I'll have to call them tomorrow. :curse: :cry:

on thier web site they give the serial numbers in question
and mine did not fall in that catagory, but just to be sure I called them, no worries. bb75
