Nice to meet all of you. I am honestly new to the whole shooting world, but have always wanted to own my own rifle. Since diving into this interest, I came across muzzleloaders, which I immediately fell in love with, and probably no less due to my love of history and traditional aspects. I hope to own many some day. At this forum, I hope to learn all I can about this great tradition of ours, and all the skills associated with it. I plan on target shooting, hunting (which will also be a first for me) as well as some re-enacting. Of course, just as importantly as all of that learning stuffs, lol, I hope to make many new friends.

WELCOME!! to the forum from Gardiner N.Y.

Welcome. I have some people out your way in Mt. Sinai, and Port Jefferson. Maybe one day you'll bump into him/them on the island...

You have picked the best place to learn about all things muzzleloading, including history.

Welcome and enjoy the Forum!

Welcome! Where in L.I. r u and how old r u if u don't mind my asking... I too share a fundamental love of history, historic arms, the safe shooting sports, and reenacting. There are some opportunities there in these regards. Some better than others. Are you more interested in Civil War (find the well run 119th NY) or Revolutionary War (find the poorly run 3rd NY) for a start?

Oh, and who's pic is your avatar!?

FMarion:

Welcome from another Long Islander! Do you go shooting at the Town of Islip shooting range?

Thank you all very much for the warm welcome. I feel I will have a great time here:

DoubleDeuce 1: That sounds great. Perhaps one day I will bump into some.

Alden: I live in Mastic Beach in the town of Brookhaven and I am 25 next month. That is great that we share some common interests. I have to say that my main interest would the the Revolutionary Way. I was thinking about trying to find a group out here. Oh, and the avatar/pic is Gen. Francis Marion from the Revolutionary War. Also where my username comes from lol.

Teleoceras: I honestly have not been yet. I have yet to buy my first rifle, and I hope to next month. Part of me really wants to get my first muzzleloader as my first rifle, but my good friend who shoots insists that I get a .22 first. I have heard both sides of the argument: "Get a .22 firs to learn how to shoot and aim" as well as "It really doesnt matter, get what you plan on shooting"

Tallbear: Hampton Bays, that isnt too far. Maybe a couple of us Long Islanders can meet up some time in the future.

Welcome to the group. Just my 2cents worth whatever you get for your 1st get a single shot those new fangled semi autos teach you to many bad habits lol. :stir:

Welcome to the forum from Orange County NY, 30 miles north of West Point Military Academy!

Good Luck on your black powder journey... You will be hooked quickly.

Teleoceros is on LI and will meet u at Islip with a gonne (hi G.!).

Mastic Beach? Yeah, sadly, the 3rd NY Reg't. for Rev. War is right by you. Brigade of the American Revolution annual School of the Soldier was all LAST weekend by West Point. Skip the Huntington Militia and the 42nd Reg't of Foot on L.I. altogether -- they don't actually do ANYTHING anymore but local milk-toast dog-n-pony shows because the members of their cliques have all basically died, sickened, stopped looking for work, or been forced to move into retirement homes. The 3rd NY cliques do SOMETHING once in a while but are also more into themselves than living history and have the pretense of being organized. None have gotten off of Long Island in many years. But the national Brigade events shine.

Oh, and Mastic Beach is where one of my heros, General Woodhull (not a Swamp Fox) is buried.

I'd probably suggest a .22 bolt action first myself (I'll get hate mail probably) especially in these times which I won't go into.

The BEST news is, in 13 years, the 250th Anniversary of the Rev. War events will be here. You should get involved and live eight years immersed in the history with the Brigade and/or the Continental Line.
