I'm interested in a shorter .44 cal (~5 1/2" barrel) pistol, and initially wanted an 1858 NMA. On another forum I have a poll on Uberti vs Pietta, and it came out that Pietta has a larger grip.

What are the size differences of the various .44 pistols available? Which ones might be more suitable for smaller hands?

I have an Old Army, and the grip is about at the edge of OK. I have short fingers, and have a problem reaching the hammer w/o adjusting my grip (I've been considering a Bisley type hammer).

Eventually I'll try to find different models to handle.

I've been 'blessed' with small hands as well and have always found the Colt 'Navy' grip the most comfortable, though the 1860 Army grip is almost as comfortable for me. The Remington grip is similar but I've always felt that my index finger was cramped. That 's just a personal sensation but agree you should find someone with both in stock and try them out for comfort and security of hold.

I'm guessing that this .44 cal '51 Yank with the birds head grip will be the smallest.
How does a '60 Army grip compare to the Uberti '58 NMA? How do they compare to a ROA grip?

From the top: '58 New Army, '51 Navy, '60 Army, all by Pietta. Sorry, don't have a bird's head grip or ROA to compare.

I've heard the '51 has a smaller grip than the '60 yet, though the shape seems a bit different, it doesn't look smaller, but maybe bigger. Is it thinner?

That '58's grip certainly looks much bigger than either.

I've heard conflicting responses as to which '58 is more HC in size, the Pietta or Uberti. Which is it?
